The Bucs will finally get to pick on someone their own size – or nearly so. Winthrop guards are mostly small – Johnson (5’7” 160 Fr.), Smith (5’10” 170 Jr.), Vega (5’10” 160 R-Jr.), with Farmer (6’5” 190 Sr.) getting about 10 minutes. Front court is a little bigger than we are, but not by as much as usual – Bourne (6’8” 240 Jr.), Brown (6’6” 210 Jr.), Jerome(6’5” 197 Sr.), Prescott (6’5” 180, So.) are the key guys, with Davenport (6’5” 200 Fr.) and Scott (6’8” 215 Fr.) getting about 10 minutes.
Usually the scourge of the Big South, Winthrop was only 14-17 last year, and 6-10 in conference. This year they were picked to finish 5th preseason in their Division, behind Charleston Southern, Gardner Webb, Coastal Carolina and UNC Asheville.

Despite that, they’ve already beaten USC Upstate (82-74), a team which beat Virginia Tech in Blacksburg and threw a scare into Tennessee in Knoxville before losing 74-65. And a team which beat the Bucs twice last year. Winthrop has also beaten D3 Roanoke, 93-74, and lost on the road to #14 VCU 92-71.
If we play the way we did the first half against Morehead, we’ll win. Play as we did the second half and we won’t beat many teams.
