RE: Official Game Thread: Winthrop
The Bucs will finally get to pick on someone their own size – or nearly so. Winthrop guards are mostly small – Johnson (5’7” 160 Fr.), Smith (5’10” 170 Jr.), Vega (5’10” 160 R-Jr.), with Farmer (6’5” 190 Sr.) getting about 10 minutes. Front court is a little bigger than we are, but not by as much as usual – Bourne (6’8” 240 Jr.), Brown (6’6” 210 Jr.), Jerome(6’5” 197 Sr.), Prescott (6’5” 180, So.) are the key guys, with Davenport (6’5” 200 Fr.) and Scott (6’8” 215 Fr.) getting about 10 minutes.

Usually the scourge of the Big South, Winthrop was only 14-17 last year, and 6-10 in conference. This year they were picked to finish 5th preseason in their Division, behind Charleston Southern, Gardner Webb, Coastal Carolina and UNC Asheville. http://www.bigsouthsports.com/entries/hi...port_id=41

Despite that, they’ve already beaten USC Upstate (82-74), a team which beat Virginia Tech in Blacksburg and threw a scare into Tennessee in Knoxville before losing 74-65. And a team which beat the Bucs twice last year. Winthrop has also beaten D3 Roanoke, 93-74, and lost on the road to #14 VCU 92-71.

If we play the way we did the first half against Morehead, we’ll win. Play as we did the second half and we won’t beat many teams.

RE: Official Game Thread: Winthrop
We have a MAJOR size advantage against this team on the perimeter and a pretty even match-up in the paint (assuming Poderis actually plays). Winthrop has three guards under six feet, and two of them - Andre Smith and Keon Johnson - combine for 28 points a game.

I look for big games from Rembert and Riley. I don't know if they would move Rembert to the 3 to get Riley on the floor (assuming they don't trust Riley to run the point in McClain's stead), but having that much firepower outside could really spread the Eagles out to open things up for Merriweather in the paint.

This feels like a very winnable game to me. A lot of the last ten non-conference games feel like winnable match-ups.

They have a few players ETSU pursued. Andre Smith, Tampa area POY was a target but never visited. Dube Okeke visited last year, and was a top target until Lukas' injury. Keon Johnson was a point guard target early last summer, I believe playing on the same AAU team as Maurice O'Field.

I'm thrilled that Giplaye is coming back in due time. He'll help.

The most dogmatic, inflexible coach in the history of the coaching profession continues to promote his ideology:
We can paint it as having depth when we’re playing 10 guys, but I’d prefer to have five that are head and shoulders above the others. You usually know what you’re going to get.”

Why would any coach "prefer" to only have 5 great players? His reasoning baffles the mind.

It is amazing to me that ETSU and Winthrop have never played -- being less than 200 miles apart and in conferences that play each other alot (both the Southern and A-Sun play Big South teams frequently).

Yea that would make his job a lot easier. He wouldn't have to worry about remembering to play our best rebounders when we are getting killed on the boards.. it's really too much to ask of a D1 basketball coach.

Duby Okeke is out with a broken leg.

If the Bucs are going to have a respectable season, they have to win games like this.

I'd like to see what Banks and D. Harris can do with 20 + minutes.

The game program already has a score. Says we lost 57-50. I hope it's not prophetic.

Smallest team we've played this year and Bartow went with Harris, Poderis, and KGG....while sitting our leading rebounder Merriweather.
