One of the problems is that the MAC has been too complacent regarding it's role. Schools like Ohio should have done more over the years so that the MAC was a completely viable junior version of the B10 in football AND basketball.

I don't think a cross-country conference can work.

Yes, but the MWC and the AAC have learn that neither conference alone is worth jack to the networks, just look how miserable both TV contracts are! They will soon realize the need to jettison their dead weight I show 20 teams but they may have to cut it down to 13 or 14 teams. However, 20 cushions against raids.

The MWC doesn't want anything to do with us after we tried to take 5 of its schools; thus all but killing the conference....

Temple, Memphis and New Mexico has no business on this list(unless you are talking about an BB only conference)

i just dont get why utah state gets so much disrespect and never gets mentioned in these board discussions.
1. their academics are average for the g5
2. they have rivalries with the strongest g5 school & a p5 school
3. 11-2 football record last year and a bb team that makes the tourny about every other year
wtf am i missing here?????

Think 20 teams and four divisions. Won't happen until that is possible. There is no reason to.

It's mainly due to being horrible in football for so long and being 3rd fiddle in a tiny population state doesn't help. If the football success can be sustained for a decade or so the perception will improve. The population thing you can't do much about--but that didn't hold Boise back.

and those are legitimate points however USU has an endowment thats double the size of bsu and has a few thousand more students.
the state of utah nearly doubles the state of idaho in population, plus utah has a population growth rate thats 3rd in the country and is double that of idaho
so while you do make legitimate points about the bsu-usu comparisons, usu is by no means in the same league as bsu in terms of college resources

My reference to Boise was simply to show a non-AQ school from a small population state can raise their profile enough to become attractive from a media standpoint. By the way, You are right---Utah has about 2.8 million people in it and Idaho has just 1.6 million. The catch is---Boise is pretty much the only game in town for Idaho. In Utah, Utah State is splitting the state with bigger fish like Utah and BYU. That said, Utah State is never going anywhere by appealing to a third of college football fans from Utah. They need to have enough success to generate interest from around the nation like Boise did. They had a nice vehicle to do that with Keaton slingin the ball around. BTW---That kid went to high school about 2 miles from me. My son played baseball against him. Keaton was quite a high school athlete. Im not surprised by his success.

personally, i think people put too much weight on football success. football cycles and these are moves based on markets & academics a lot more than athletics. in a conference draft, i bet USU gets taken ahead of BSU.
the 3rd best team in utah is a very legitimate point however id still take a major state school thats well established academically & athletically* over BSU
by athletically im talking the amount of time they have spent at the d1 level and the rivalries they have built

with what money? The current MAC contract with ESPN pays out $1m total. That's not much split 12 ways. What's ticket revenue on 15K avg attendance? And with what media exposure? Ohio's football team never appeared on any ESPN channel until 2005, how can they compete with the Scarlet and Grey gorilla for mind share when they're invisible?
I hear ya, just sayin it ain't for a lack of trying. People tend to equate the stability of the MAC with complacency and that's not true for most of teams. There are a couple of teams that are dead wood and ok with it but every conference has those to some degree.
The reality is half of the MAC resides in Ohio and a certain school in Columbus would never stand for another school in the state raising its profile.
