OT: Beckman and Cubit get into it on the sideline
Another coach had to step in and separate Cubit.

STORY

Not exactly sure what it was about. One report was that Beckman called a play and Cubit did what he wanted.

Illini were in the game at that point. 3rd and 14 near your own goal, the only play is forward. Wonder what Beckman's call was? Maybe he had good reason to be peeved?

Note to Coach Tim Beckman: "fighting" in "fighting Illini" is used as an adjective, not a verb! It refers to "fighting" against another team on the field of play, not fighting against your own assistants on the sidelines.

I almost feel UT needs to make a formal apology to Illinois and their fans. I am glad they got both Beckman and Golesh as a package. They are PR guys.

I'm sure the pressure of an impending firing just got to be too much. Hope his situation is a warning to other good young coaches in the MAC, wherever they coach.

Illinois got what they deserved. No apology needed; if anything, perhaps a "Thank you" would be in order, but after the WNIT, I wouldn't even offer them that.

Hadsell warned him it was a mistake (oh, the irony); but on the other hand, as I recall, the Illinois job guaranteed him something like $7 million which is a nice payday. Of course Illinois has been a graveyard for something like 6 out of their last 7 head FB coaches (I am to lazy to look up the exact number, but this is close). Still if Beckman was shrewd enough to invest most of this windfall and not start living like royalty or spending like the US Congress, this should be enough to keep him and his family living comfortably for the rest of his life. Besides, he probably will still get one more year to turn it around at the U of I and if doesn't work out then he can probably still land an assistant coaching position somewhere in the FBS or maybe even a head coaching job at some FCS or NAIA school which will give him something to do until he retires and also supplement his investment income from the $7 million.

I couldn't agree with you more. Only the players that were there know what kind of coaches were behind the smiles and handshakes.

Beckman should have listened to Hadsell, as Hadsell was an expert of mistakes.
Then again we are light years ahead with Campbell as our coach.

Don't know Beckman at all, but I will never say a harsh word about him. I still recall the Amstutz years. We're ahead under Campbell, in large part, due to the framework laid by Beckman. Improved discipline, improved academics and improved talent and record. Those are tangible results. Plus he beat BG in his last two games and they REALLY hate him so he gets praise here, even if he doesn't know when to call TOs.

I ran into Beckman a couple of times at the Andersons. Very approachable and easygoing. Of course at that time, things were going well for him and the Rocket program.

Cubit probably just wanted to call time out.

Beckman is a good man. he will be back at Illinois next year by virtue of the fact that Illinois is already paying off three other coaches that were fired early. However, several existing ASSISTANT COACHES WILL BE CANNED TO MEET THE DEMANDS OF THE FAN BASE!

Beckman gets one more year and if he wins fewer than 6 then he is absolutely gone.

I was surprised that Beckman even got the offer so soon from Illinois in the first place although I think he was the 4th or 5th candidate they offered and the first one who didn't turn them down. I was even more surprised that he left after only 3 years at UT without a MACC for a proven graveyard for football head coaches such as Illinois especially with the cupboard at UT being far from bare and the future looking rosy. I suppose he figured that his age would soon be working against him and he had best jump at the very first big time opportunity that knocked.

I said then I hoped he would invest his windfall salary for the long haul because Illinois had the reputation of eating head football coaches alive and then spitting them out onto the pile of failed coaching careers. Anyway he still should have one more year to show what he can do at Illinois and if he does pull it off he will have done what few of his immediate predecessors at the U of I were able to accomplish.

Either way, I think that despite the youth of the current coaching staff and the fact they are still growing (experience wise), I am pleased that Campbell is the current head coach.

Beckman's love affair with osu always turned me off. He gets some credit for hiring Matt Campbell. We are lucky he left, and MOB was smart enough to hire MC.

I think Beckman went as far as he was going to go with UT... and needed to get out while someone was offering him something... I hope he gets a 3rd year... I think he may pull it out to at least winning 7 games there next year...

As for Matt? I am not sold on him yet... however, if we beat N ILL... then, he will be upgraded...
