He needs to move the men's and women's tournament to MSG and Barclays, respectively, held during the same week.
I'm sure this is going to be a big surprise and a punch in the stomach to both Maryland and Hoya fans. Otoh, the Verizon Center will be "home" to Syracuse fans as much as both Virginia and Virginia Tech fans.

You're new to the ACC. You have yet to fully understand the dynamic between Maryland and the league office in Greensboro -- and that was BEFORE Maryland announced it was jumping ship.
There may be many reasons for this move, but I guarantee one of them is an intentional FU to Maryland.

Yeah, there are tons of Pitt alumni in the DC area and I believe it's the second closest ACC school to DC after UVA. There will be a large Pitt contingent there.

I didn't mean to suggest that it wasn't a happy circumstance of moving it there, but there's no way you make major financial decisions like that primarily as an "FU".
Really, now that Maryland is gone, the ACC seeking more presence in DC metro should be a given. I'd consider holding the ACC lax championship there as well.

Pitt had half the Verizon for last year's Georgetown game.
To be honest, losing MD hurt Pitt perhaps more than any other school.
While we are in Maryland's backyard they will be playing Northwestern in Indianapolis so it is F U to Maryland because while it could happen I seriously doubt seeing the B1G championship in D.C...New York? Maybe. This is also a move to keep us in D.C and Maryland. We're not giving it up just cuz they are leaving.

im sure they had their reasons other than giving maryland a FU, however this is the ACC where making moves perceived as FU is common practice and this is just another example.
im sure that it came up in the ACC meeting room......
so it was a factor in some small shape or form
on a side note: remember how hoya fans said the verizon center was tainted cuz cuse won a regional there......

I'm not sure claiming "half" the fans at a game with attendance of 13011 says much, even if true.
Did the Hoyas ever come up with a plan to try and prevent Pitt fans from taking over the Verizon? They did with SU.
And I'd say Maryland leaving the ACC hurt SU overall more when you consider we were in the same division as them in football (Pitt would have only played them infrequently), and our excelling in the same sports they excel at - men's and women's lacrosse and more recently (for us) field hockey.

Uh, yeah, right, an unranked Pitt team coming off two loses including at Rutgers playing a Tuesday night 9pm game. The previous time playing there was a Wednesday night game.
Georgetown isn't our main rival, unlike your game last year billed all year as the last ever game in the series that fell on the final Saturday afternoon of the season and had the ESPN Gameday hype-fest. And the time before that you played there was a CBS noon broadcast weekend game too...which I believe is the one you are referring to where they only sold tickets as packages. Nice try at comparing panthers to oranges.
Pitt has just about the same number of alumni in the area and is only 4 hours away. Unless Pitt has a terrible year, we won't be outnumbered. Heck, last time Pitt played Syracuse in the Big East Championship game, we weren't outnumbered either.

I never thought of the ACC owning DC, I kind of always saw it as Big East land... there is no major college football team in DC, I just kind of think of it as a basketball city, because of Georgetown. So moving the tourney there is an affront more to the new Big East, than Maryland.

well now its gonna get even more tainted
Kudos for using "Hoya" and "taint" in the same sentence.
This interview aired last week and there are some interesting nuggets in this piece, IMHO. However, what most stood out to me was Dixon's implication that Washington, DC could become a near permanent host of the ACC Men's Basketball Tournament. That caught me completely by surprise and frankly, it left me somewhat conflicted.
On one hand, Washington, DC is just four hours from PGH so we would definitely bring a lot of fans to those games - I know I'd go just about every time. I have no idea if we'd have as many fans as Syracuse or anyone else - and nor do I particularly care - but I do know that we would be very well represented. Also, the Beltway is a recruiting hotbed and DC is a GREAT city to hang out in.
However, on the other hand, there is only one New York City and there is only one Madison Square Garden. Getting away from NYC/MSG would be a mistake, IMHO.
One thing I am not conflicted by is the thought that the ACC should DEFINITELY move the championship game to Saturday night instead of Sunday afternoon. Playing the championship game on Saturday night was a HUGE advantage for the Big East and it can be for the ACC as well. Leave Sunday afternoon for the boring leagues like the Big Ten and Big 12.
Other nuggets of buried treasure included:
* Pitt will always play at least one game in New York City to maintain a recruiting presence there.
* Pitt considered UConn its biggest Big East rival.
* Pitt modeled its program after UConn.
* Pitt has tried to schedule games versus Georgetown and Villanova.
* Pitt would like to play West Virginia but WVU will do it only on the condition that Pitt agrees to play them in football which, right now, is not happening due mostly to violent WVU fan behavior. Hell, in one of our most recent basketball games, one of their neanderthals almost took out an eye of one of our assistant coaches.
It became so bad that they halted the game not once but twice so that Bob Huggins could admonish the crowd for its boorish behavior. A few days after the game, WVU's now former president James Clement issued a formal apology to Pitt. So don't hold your breath waiting for the resumption of the Backyard Brawl in either football or men's basketball.
It's a shame because those games are fun and spirited for most fans of both teams. However there have just been too many alleged instances of violent fan behavior just like this one to be ignored. If the WVU brass is not going to take the necessary steps to control their ever growing criminal element then Pitt should feel no compulsion to put its student-athletes/coaches/fans in harm's way.
We're competing against each other in sporting events, we're not involved in some sort of war or prison riot. Too many of their fans do not seem to grasp that reality and as such, those people have helped kill an otherwise great rivalry.

You're reading a little too much into some of his statements. Dixon never implied that DC could become the "near permanent" home of the tourney. He was only commenting on the the pending arrangement which was just announced today.

yeah, but Georgetown *only* sells tickets to Hoya alumni associations when we play them there.
