Southern Miss holds a 23-7 series lead, but the conditions surrounding Tulane football are improving very quickly. I think Tulane would be able to split the next ten games down the middle if they were to sign a home-and-home agreement.

Five to ten years ago I would have told you that Southern Miss would win 9 of 10 - with 6 of those 9 wins being blowouts.

100 percent agree.....would be silly not to develop that one

Am I going to miss ECU? Sure.

However, you guys easily make the most 'cents'.

For some bizarre reason, Tulane would rather open their first AAC season with a nondescript FCS school instead of a traditional FBS opponent.

There are many FBS schools that do exactly this (at the detriment of possible rivalries) - and then they have the gall to complain about fans not showing up... ...really!?!?

spot on....

once you guys get your new stadium, it would be a kick to enjoy....even in today's world we would show 5k+....we love an 'excuse' to go to sin city.....you guys being in the west was really a downer for many of us.

if I'm our AD, this would be a priority.....

edit: for andre.....you guys are also in 'that' conference...ya know, the one 'we' are 'supposed' to be in 03-wink

And we're going to continue doing that because we need FCS teams to make sure we have 6 home games. Our AD is a lazy scheduler, and he poorly planned future schedules, such that we have something like 5 net road liabilities over the next 6 seasons. That means FCS to even up the schedule. I don't expect USM on our football schedules but they should be.
And if we don't play them in 2 or 3 midweek baseball games, both coaches should have their heads examined. Should play in basketball 2.
BTW, we open with southeastern, who's as hot a FCS team as you can find. They'll be working on us in their spring and fall camps. We need to play SWAC teams so we can have a real tune up.

First and foremost from a recruiting standpoint, your chances of playing a div II game being televised is nil if your a G5 school where as playing someone tougher even at their home, gives you a decent shot to be on TV somewhere and be able to get recruits watching.

Second G5 schools are going to need as strong of a OOC schedule as possible because they are competing with every other G5 school for that 1 coveted BCS at large bid. They had better have wins over schools that matter or at least appear to matter, don't make it easy for the commitee to say ...well damn that school beat the Citadel....thats not really a win.

Third its way more fun to play a div I team and the win is that much more gratifying for the fan base, and the schools perception.

The only argument for the intentional cupcake game (and if it isn't FBS then it is intentional) is you can get a 6 win and maybe make a bowl game. But is your school really competing for that, some bowl game that no one gives a damn about? Is 6-6 really that great so that you can most likely be 6-7 because you weaseled your way to a .500 record? Maybe. That's the only way its useful, because it will be irrelevant or a hindrance in any other circumstance.

I think having Southern Miss or Marshall....or UAB or any other G5 school would be way more preferable that a non FBS school.

Personally, Id love to see a AAC vs CUSA or AAC vs MW or CUSA vs AAC challenge that went on for a couple years. Personally I think its fun to play new opponents and have found this year in CUSA pretty neat seeing ECU play teams you don't see often like Middle Tenn, FAU, FIU...and I really would have liked to have played LT and tried to make Skip Holtz regret some more leaving ECU (;-D in my mind he cries himself to sleep at night on that decision).

I see ECU fans all the time clamoring for making the schedule easier, unfortunately every non ECU fan, and ever non G5 fan already sees our schedule (fair or unfair) as easy, we don't have the luxury to play FCS school like the non G5 does. If you can't get the so called big boys, then at least get teams that can possibly benefit you.

So here is to hoping this series has a few games every decade mixed in with others from this conference and other G5's as well.

All that SOS bullcrap is strictly theoretical right now. I believe they'll apply it to the P5 for the playoff but I don't think it will matter too much for the G5 folks hoping for the Access Bowl. Frankly speaking, I don't think they give a damn who gets the Access Bowl from the G5. They might even lean more heavily toward who they think will travel more if the resume's are very similar.

Look at NIU and Fresno for proof of how high you get ranked with a weak SOS.

Besides, with the mix of OOC vs WVU, BYU, UNC, VT, SC and in conferernce games with Cincy, UCF, Navy, Houston & Tulsa I don't see ANY reason that we will need to make our schedule even harder. We've got arguably one of the toughest OOC schedules for a G5 school nearly every season.

Blunder, do you think your current leadership knows who was primarily responsible for ECU getting the Cusa bid after they had initially been left behind?

Even if they know, do they care? I doubt it.

I want to see the games continue, but bet they don't care what USM did in the past to help ECU. To be blunt, that doesn't even enter into to the equation now.

I do think something will get done, but it won't be a yearly deal, we short term don't have many hole, some years are fully booked, same for USM. One thing, the new administration does need to learn more about the history and respect it more. One thing is for sure, change too much, or piss us off, you will get run out of town.

With the series record I don't blame them.

That has nothing to do with it. USM isn't in an area in which we recruit athletes or students. Back in the Indy days it made a lot of sense to play USM every year.

Has everything to do with it. They know USM won't suck forever, and want to schedule sure wins.
That's right because everyone knows ECU is all about scheduling sure wins. 01-wingedeagle

My advice to USM's AD is to not take any calls from AAC schools unless the subject is conference affiliation.
