Owns every single Big 10 passing record, was the MVP of the Alamo and Outback Bowls, was Maxwell Player of the Year.

Then he personally resurrected the Chargers, had them on a path towards many Super Bowls, gets hurt, Nick Saban chooses not to sign him, if he did Saban would still be at Miami and Alabama would be a middle of the pack SEC team.

Brees has gone on to win a Super Bowl, MVP, MVP of the Super Bowl and Miami and San Diego remain two mediocre franchises. He may win another MVP this season. Shattered Dan Marino's record.....On and on and on. Freak.

I also watched the game last night, and I also was reminded of TH while watching Drew Brees surgically take apart the Cowboys.

Is it right to compare TH with the current Drew Brees? Of course not.

Is it right to compare TH with college player Drew Brees of the past? Of course it is. According to Wikipedia, by the time he graduated from Purdue, Brees was the Big Ten record holder in multiple passing categories, including completions (1,026), yards (11,792) and touchdowns (90). By comparison, with two games left in his junior year, Heinicke has 912 completions for 11,012 yards and 98 touchdowns, and he is the NCAA Division I record holder for most passing yards in a season and most passing yards in a game.

Also in comparison, TH was the Georgia offensive player of the year his senior year in high school, has already won the Walter Payton Award, twice led his team to the FCS playoffs, and led his team to a conference championship as a sophmore. All this, and he has another year of college eligibility.

Is that a loose comparison? Nah -- it's a strong, valid comparison that recognizes many similarities and speaks to the potential that TH possesses. Time alone will tell if TH can ever be compared to Drew Brees as he is in his professional prime – but I wouldn’t bet against it.

TH is certainly smart enough and fast enough. My biggest concern is size and arm strength as it relates to the NFL. If he has an NFL arm then he'll be drafted in the late rounds and would certainly have a chance to be the next Drew Brees. If scouts don't believe he has the strength I think he becomes a Kellen Moore / Matt Flynn type and is viewed as UFA with the potential to be a system specific backup.

Next year will be huge as he plays more top flight talent.

He currently is at 3551 yds and 29 TDs. If ODU was fully eligible for FBS play this year he would be leading the NCAA in passing yards and would be 4th in TDs. Granted if ODU played a full FBS schedule his numbers would probably look a little different.

Extrapolating his 4 FBS games out to 10 games played, he'd be at 3373 yards and 23 TDs.

That'd be 3rd in yards, 10th in TDs, 23rd in completion percentage.

Not bad.

I still see him getting a chance to prove himself as an UDFA, which may be better because he'll have a chance to choose the situation he thinks is best for him.

TH is currently the 17th ranked quarterback for the 2015 draft at nfldraftscouts.com. That web site also reports that the five-year average number of quarterbacks taken in the draft is twelve, and in two of the past five years 13 QBs were drafted. Also, on average, an additional 26 undrafted free agent quarterbacks make it to an NFL training camp.

Given those numbers, it is not only reasonable, it is a virtual lead pipe cinch certainty that TH will get an opportunity to compete for a position with an NFL team in 2015. Personally, I like the odds for him being drafted. He is extremely accurate, and two other traits that will differentiate him from many of his competitors are his pocket presence and his speed. On the web site, TH is listed with a 4.64 speed in the 40 yard dash while 11 of the 15 QBs ranked ahead of him are 4.72 or worse, and a pretty large number of them are in the 4.8 – 4.9+ range. If TH moves up the chain just four to five spots, he is a pretty solid bet to be drafted.

IMO, TH has already demonstrated the potential to be drafted despite his height. Whether or not that potential is realized is totally dependent upon how he performs next year against a full slate of FBS competition. I see him moving up in the QB rankings and being a third/fourth round (or perhaps later) pick if he continues to play at his current level against the improved competition.

Thanks for sharing the research. That is great stuff.

I'm sold on the fact that he will be playing football somewhere after college. If he doesn't end up in the NFL, drafted, UDFA, or otherwise, I think the CFL is calling his name.

RE: Taylor Heinicke
he would dominate the CFL. he'll get his shot in the NFL, but I seriously doubt as a starter but just a practice squad prospect. no one will draft him thinking he's a franchise QB unless he's so good next year that everyone will be watching. we'll see.
