Fear the REAL Spartans!
There is a reason Columbia doesn't want to play my alma mater any more ... they got the scare of their life each time they played.

Now Virginia Tech got the wrong end of the real Spartans.

USC Upstate 64
Virginia Tech 63
Final

Sorry GTS, when you said real Spartans, I thought you were talking about UNC-Greensboro.

East Lansing. Not very Spartan-ish.
Greensboro. Not very Spartan-ish.
Spartanburg. Very Spartan-ish.

(Though, I liked them more as the USCS Riflemen)

We are talking about VATech hoops, is the loss really "outstanding"?

Um, yes. An ACC team lost to Upstate SC. The hoakies are a one trick pony, and when Beamer retires they will just be a pony.

Talk of the greatest league of all time...put on hold until the ACC figures out if they have real teams after the first 6 to 8 schools. pretty embarrassing to lose to teams like this...Miami and BC are on notice too.

So at that point they will be the same as UVA. Absolutely worthless.

Hey, at least Hokie fans travel well... oh, how the basketball program has fallen since the Dell Curry years! 03-weeping

True. Of course you can't expect UVA fans to travel when they will not even go to their home games. One guy on a Clemson board who went to Charlottesville the other week said the empty seat to bow-tie ratio was about 1/1.

Upstate is one of those schools who are DI in name only. They only moved to DI to get a cut of March Madness money.

Pretty much.

Although it has exploded in size so much I think that could change over the long haul. It's a shame they couldn't get a Convocation Center like they proposed. The really need to move the sports out of Hodge so it can be redone as a proper home for Math, CS, Robotics, etc. But of course, Columbia is already upset that Upstate has a better CS and Nursing program, so fat chance they'll hand over money to be upstaged any more. This of course while the chickens are throwing up new 8 and 9 figure buildings at the rate of one or two a year.

It's pretty clear that SC will eventually have two big publics in the Upstate ... two big publics in the Midlands ... and two big publics in the low country. Clemson/Upstate .... Chickenland/SC State .... Coastal/??. CofC, Wofford, Furman are limited by their exorbitant cost and by being private. The Citadel is limited in scope for obvious reasons.

Yeah, finding a pairing for Coastal that A. doesn't hurt them and B. doesn't leave out Charleston/Summerville/Beaufort is going to be hard. The obvious choice would be Francis Marion, but it would go against both A & B.

USC-Beaufort could be a candidate, but with Columbia already worrying about Upstate I don't know how willing they would be to expand that campus. IMO it would probably take Beaufort doing what FMU & Coastal did when they separated from the USC system. Add to that the fact that if Charleston were to be left out it would raise a huge political stink, the Lowcountry side of the equation is problematic at best.

Also I wouldn't be so quick to peg SC State as the second big public in the Midlands. Because of their HBCU mission I could see them being left alone to do what they do and USC-Aiken being the second major public in the Midlands.

It isn't that big ... and it is more of an niche that services all the Charlotte suburbs and exurbs.
