In terms of the previous firing comment. He fired Karcher not Snow, Stewart or Anderson they moved on on their own.

I must say that this has been the most roller coaster 3 weeks that has happened at EMU in years..

It's one that can say I have not seen at a college program in years..

What must these kids be going thru?

Well first, you don't like anyone to lose their job. These guys all have families, so this is not a pleasant thing. That said, I'm sure he and his staff knew pretty early on that this was it, the end of the road, so it is not a shock. But still, I think he was on the right track to changing the losing culture of EMU football with that 6-6 season. Unfortunately, he could not maintain the momentum and when his assistants jumped ship, this season was going to be the disaster it has become.

They didn't jump ship....he fired them!

Maybe they were forced to leave?

Yeah I'm pretty sure you don't force guys to leave for Cal, Temple, and the Buffalo Bills.

Your few sentences says a lot for those who like to 'read between the lines.'

I have every reason to belief EMU wanted English to finish the season out but just thought they couldn't.

We started this season losing football games, then a player to a homicide and now a situation which appears to be not pretty.

Bad times for our football program including players, assistant coaches, staff, fans, and anyone who cares about it.

Hopefully a booster picked up the tab.

Okay, that appears to be the smoking gun which connects all the dots and closes the loop. The posts in the thread make it abundantly clear in the FootballScoop staff member's opinion that EMU had no choice but to fire English 'for cause'. We're seen it with a number of coaches who cross the line in some way, e.g., Mike Leach, the coach at W. Ky (damn forgot his name), coaches at FAU, etc.

It appears that within 24 hours (actually less than 20) that we have a very good idea what has happened.

It appears that he has been fired 'for cause' and therefore that firing would negate any protections which he might have had in his contract.

Those coaching contracts (the ones I've seen, e.g., Murphy, Genyk, etc.) are full of clauses regarding 'for cause' termination and English has apparently gone 'over the line' if footballscoop.com is correct.

EDIT: The sad thing for English is that this really hurts his reputation. Footballscoop.com is where coaches, etc. go for info about the coaching profession. We've here (on this board) used that site for info regarding head and assistant coach search info. This could hurt English as he looks for his next coaching job.

Unless I misread the article in the Detroit Free Press, they said he was fired for 'no cause' and that Eastern will pay him the remaining salary of over $48,000. The final payment coming in December.

Ken, you appear to be right according to the Freep's reporting, but the article is far from clear if English was fired for or without cause. (BTW, I did miss the article when I quickly checked the Freep this a.m.).

The article does not seem to indicate any clauses giving English additional protections in the event of a firing without cause.

The writing style seems to indicate that the writer has seen the contract and that the expiration date could be say 60 months from his hiring which was a few days before Christmas 2008.

Obviously I have no idea if this was a firing with a negotiated settlement of $ or if there will be a fight over it.

Honestly, I thought it would be worse. I can understand how it would be hard to motivate yourself to play for a guy who talks to you like that, but I've heard worse.

Calling them a “bleep” football team seems to be beyond the pale. Cussing I have no issue with. It’s the shredding of a terrible team that disgusts me. Does he seriously think attacking them will motivate them?

What he doesn’t understand is that this team is a reflection. They are this bad because of him. It’s his schemes, his techniques, and his players. He recruited these kids.
