Should Southern Miss fire their coach?
How are they going to weather the storm the rest of the year. They are likely going to lose the rest of their games; how can you keep this coach?

Schools can't afford to fire coaches every year

I don't think Monken gets fired.

Difference in Monken and Ellis Johnson:

Monken gives a f*ck. He takes responsibility for what's went wrong this season. You never hear him blaming the players for a loss or saying stupid things like: Well if they were to win, we'd have a bunch of unruly kids on our hands.

There are things out of your control when it comes to ballgames. I'm sure there have been some bad play calls on both sides. Injuries have killed us and some of our receivers can't catch a cold if they were buck naked, soaking wet, in the middle of a blizzard in Alaska. It's tough to admit, and maybe that's what caused the losses last year was talent. However, Ellis thought it would happen and never really participated in the coaching process, Monk has. And 07owl is right, we can't fire a coach every year. I think we stick with this one for another season. I feel like he can get the results.

However, if they fire him, I will support that decision and back the new guy whomever it maybe. This time last year there were people calling for Ellis Johnson's head like there was no tomorrow. This year I haven't heard it. Monken has coaches in place that can take us where we need to go. We just have to bear through this til it happens.

I think USM will be fine in a few seasons. But regardless of what does happen in the win column, you have to think they are married to Monken for the foreseeable future. For a program to pony up the cash to get rid of a coach like Ellis Johnson just speaks volumes of how bad of a hire he was.

For the purposes of stability. You've seen USM fans state that they are lean on talent thanks to Fedora (UNC is about to learn a really hard lesson). Talent isn't something that's fixed in one year, you're seeing that also with teams like Arkansas, Tennessee, etc...
North Texas has had the same issues, you have to give a coach somewhere around 3-5 years to see where it goes. You expect in a rebuilding job to be bad in year one, mediocre in year two but show flashes of a decent team, year three, maybe the same, year four, you're contending.

Here's another thing you're about to see. You're about to see those who truly bleed black and gold and those who pretend to. I feel like while we're not going to pack the stands until we get the Ws again, we'll have some fans that'll stick it out and watch as many Golden Eagle games as possible and pull for the boys. You're going to have some that claim to be USM fans during the good times and during the bad times we won't hear or see them until the good times come back.

Will I trade in my Black, Gold, and White polos with USM logos on them for Crimson and White polos? No.

Will I trade in all my USM t-shirts and ballcaps for LSU, MSU, Auburn, or Mizzou gear? Not on your life.

I really believe if Monken would've been hired last season over Johnson, we'd be seeing different results this season. And let's not forget, we came damn close on a couple of games with Johnson at the helm, but he had some talent.

Monken will turn out to be very successful at USM. Unlike Skip Holtz, who I love as a person but whose best coaching days are behind him, Monken's best days of coaching lie ahead.

Monken absolutely sucks, but we've got to give him at least three years, for continuity.

I don't buy into all that crap about how/why Monken is better than EJ. He's not. He just happens to be in a better position to keep his job than EJ was.

Monken took over a team that went 0-12 and had to deal with the ruins of what Ellis Johnson left at Southern Miss, Monken is going to be okay!

Monkin is a good coach. He is trying to fix a mess that was not his fault. He will win way more than he loses at USM in the long run. Don't give up. As folks in Hattiesburg say TTT!!!

This... I was a Monken supporter from the end of the Fedora era, and i am STILL a Monken supporter.

RE: Should Southern Miss fire their coach?
What coach has ever been blown out as badly and as often as Monken? I've watched a lot of football, and I've never seen anything like this. I haven't even seen it happen at the high school level.

If you've seen what I've seen and you still think Monken is a good coach, I think you're just selling Southern Miss short. There's nothing special about our school or our situation. We've just got a crap coach. He'd be crap at LSU, or Petal HS, or coaching the Memphis Showboats. Admitting that is step one, and it is not an admission that rules out the possibility that someday Monken might develop some coaching skill. But he does not have any ability as a head coach right now.

How decimated is USM on defense? Excuse my ignorance. The biggest problem I saw last Sat. was a total lack of speed throughout the defense. The O gets a mulligan for the rookie QB who might end up being very good, might not.

Taking over a trainwreck and having an even worse season than before doesn't make you a good coach. It simply means that you have an excuse for your team being horrible.

I THINK Monken is a good coach and will turn it around.

But, at this point, there isn't an iota of proof out there that either of those is true.

To suggest firing him, however, is ludicrous.

Simply put: The jury is still very much out and will probably be out until 2015.
