UTSA Coach Larry Coker on how to beat Tulsa
First of all, congrats to UTSA, a team most Tulsa fans realized was quite capable. UTSA was the best team Saturday.

What Coker said following the game isn't news....just about every Tulsa fan would agree with Coker and also held this view weeks ago. Handing the starting QB position to Cody Greene, a 50% completion passer from the previous year, is now coming to haunt to the extent of putting the Tulsa football program in jeopardy. I have followed Tulsa football since the mid-1960s and haven't seen anything like this before.

I now feel a lot of the dumb errors made by others on the team is because Tulsa players are over extending and trying to do too much...to compensate for the lack of a passing game.

UTSA Coach Larry Coker:
"They run the ball well. We forced them into a game where they had to throw it. When you get out of your comfort zone, that's a big advantage for us."

I think that is the formula against every team. It's going to be a lot better on a team if they make their opponent one dimensional

Its not just one bad year.

Its coaching. We will be much worse next year. We wont have Todd Graham's recruits anymore.

Not taking anything away from UTSA or Coach Coker but Tulsa runs a 8th grade offense. Run up the gut 1st and 2nd down every play. Cody Green is a horrible QB. This was masked last year with Alex Singleton, a SR O Line and a really good defense.

Recruiting has shifted away from Texas which is also a huge concern.

And the offensive formula is, if the opposing defensive teams stacks the box to stop the run, you throw passes. Tulsa cannot pass because of the worst quarterback in TU's history as I have watched TU football.

What is new to me--and what I have never seen before--is TU continuing to play QB Cody Green, when he continues to fail.

And, of course, TU does this in fear starting QB Cody Green will toss an interception.

Tulsa will get well against the Herd. Green will throw for 400 yards and 4 TD's. We never play well there. ugh!!!!!!!!!!!

Pressure Cody Green...Send the house at him, force him to make immediate decisions with the ball, and neutralize that "bubble screen" play they love to run so much...

Where is Tulsa recruiting if not in Texas? That does seem a mistake to me. That can't be helped by the AAC providing only one game a year in Texas, in Dallas or in Houston. Are you trying to schedule other Texas schools out of conference?

I think schedules are already pretty full several years out, but I'd love for us to schedule a home and home with Rice. Actually, I sincerely hope you guys end up back in the same conference with us.

As for this entire topic, Coker didn't invent the wheel here. I've watched teams since the first game (Bowling Green), stack 8 guys in a box 3yds from the LOS, put both CB's in bump and run, and leave one safety about 7yds off the LOS. Hard to run up the guy on that.

We have bigger issues than just QB though. That is certainly the main one, but our WR's just aren't very good, they drop passes and cant get separation in man coverage, and our special teams verges on attrocious. Being close to last in the country in net punting and turnover margin is bad mojo. You don't overcome those problems with a bad QB and average WR's.

That is 100% coaching IMO. Our special teams were awful and costing us games before the bye and has since been noticeably improved. Our receivers also have issues getting separation but our OC uses their skills in different ways. As an example our #1 WR (Kam Jones) had 2 rushing TDs vs Tulsa

I don't think you'll find many Tulsa fans that disagree with you at this point.
