As the resident female I can answer this one. You won't like the answer because truthfully it's a sh!tty thing that we as women do the men in our lives.

We want you to *know* what's wrong. Because typically when we do this it's either because of something you (or the kids) have done or it's something that we've mentioned 100 times that has finally occurred (or hasn't as the case may be). We want to know that you're listening to us and hearing us when we talk.

Is it fair? No, absolutely not. Is it going to continue to happen, probably so.

I will say that my husband is really great about forcing me to talk about it even if it leads to a fight because ultimately the only way to get a resolution.
