UTEP Fans Already Bought 2 Entire Sections At Apogee For Saturday
....and it is still just Monday.

Last Thursday night at the Rice/North Texas game there was hardly 2 full sections available (on the east student side and visitors side) due to probably our largest UNT student turnout in history.

UTEP must have a strong DFW alumnus base. And UTEP's early tickets purchases info from the Coach Dan McCarney DFW area radio show off the air just minutes ago.

Coach Mac very complimentary toward the UTEP Miners with a sincere (not phony coach talk) respect for their football program and team.

This Saturday is Homecoming at North Texas and some now predicting more Mean Green (and Miner) fans than the 28,000 that showed for Apogee's debut against the Houston Cougars....we'll see.

Friday night the Talons (UNT students spirit group) will have stacked 5,000 pallets for one helluva big bonfire and pep rally which the entire Mean Green FB team will attend.

The bonfire and pep rally have been a tradition at North Texas since 1935. The Talons took over building the bonfire in 1960 and have it to this day along with Boomer the "COME AND TAKE IT" cannon with has also been part of UNT tradition for many decades. UT-Austin students once stole Boomer from our campus before one of our 70's games against the Horns but it was later safely returned.

Winning cures cancer (and will wake up much of our 200K DFW area alums, too, and that because of wins and (hopefully) 3 or 4 winning seasons in a row, too)!04-cheers

That's why we say that if UTEP had so many consecutive winning season as so. miss they'd be putting seats in the cemented area already. I'm glad for you guys that our central texas alums love our miners. You'll see it during the basketball season too. You just wait and see.

It is impressive with the number of UTEP fans that continue to show up despite some not so great results (we can relate to the results part) in football.

If something does not dramatically change, we may have dropped men's basketball by the time we play UTEP in basketball.

Well, I don't do basketball.

Like they used to say during the old Southwest Conference era down here and that was: Basketball is what you do between Spring and Fall football!04-jawdrop

I do reckon UTEP is going to teach UNT very much about basketball, though. 04-cheers

RE: UTEP Fans Already Bought 2 Entire Sections At Apogee For Saturday
Glad to hear our alumni are still showing up.

FYI- Due to El Paso's limited corporate/headquarters, we always refer to the brain-drain of El Paso. College grads leave El Paso for Dallas, Houston, Austin, Phoenix, San Antonio, Los Angeles, and San Francisco (prob in that order too). Thus, creating huge alumni numbers in those cities.

This is why we teased the SMU fellas, about how the games in Dallas were UTEP home games.

I forget what year it was- but UTEP was having a good fball year, and we were going to play at TCU. There were so many fans in the area and traveling, that rumors were that UTEP fans were going to attempt to outdraw TCU fans in their own stadium, and take down their goal posts if UTEP won. Not sure if we would have outdrawn TCU at their place, but there was enough talk of it that it worried some folks out at the school. Needless to say, our team fizzled...... Again.

When UTEP first came into CUSA they were on a bit of a roll and they led CUSA in attendance by a large number....They have a very good fan base and an awesome football stadium.

Seriously, this is why I always identified with ECU. Because few schools that are so often dismissed by the media, can put 50K+ in a stadium with an 7-8 win team.

But the fact that your fans still show up shows that you have a strong program.

A couple SMU confidants told me UTEP fans travelled quite impressively to their games at Ford Stadium. If UTEP sells out their allotment at Apogee then that means UNT students will have to over-flow into the Wing Zone seats (end zone). The turnstiles count once all the numbers are in for our 2:30 PM kick-off will be interesting since Homecoming also brings out many older alums who come to the football game.

I remember back in the day when our UNT frats and sororities would show up en mass for Homecoming and all sit at their respective places at old Fouts Field. I sorta' miss those days.

I have three of us that will be there Saturday. It would have been four but my daughter will be sitting in the UNT student section with her fellow students. I guess she is now a mean green fan. Lol

I think it's still a little early to talk sell out, but if UTEP fill it's allotment, and the weather looks decent, we could be looking at a very large crowd.

A bit biased here, but it really is a great fan-friendly stadium that yall will find this Saturday at the 2:30 kick-off--not a bad seat in the house. I've even sat in the Wing Zone for one game and couldn't believe the sight-line visuals even from an end zone seat.

I've been to 2 Lone Star State stadium debuts; (1) the Houston Astrodome on April 9, 1965 (got to see "The Mick, ie, #7" hit the first "dome" run in that exhibition game) and then (2) Apogee Stadium (9/10/11) against the Houston Cougars. I have to say Apogee still impressed me as much as "the Eighth Wonder of the World" probably because of what I knew it would ultimately mean for our football program more than anything else.

There will be a lot of UTEP fans who don't purchase their tickets through our athletics office, so expect even more fans than the allotment numbers... BTW, what is the number of tickets allotted to UTEP for this game?

RE: UTEP Fans Already Bought 2 Entire Sections At Apogee For Saturday
Doesn't CUSA require 1,500 guest tickets?

UTEP fans can walk up on Game Day and buy as many tickets as they want. With what I'm hearing now, they might want to order them well before Saturday thru a TicketMasters type of operations, though. I don't see a sellout yet since all this "winning business" is still a novelty for our program but this game may eclipse the debut game numbers versus Houston.

I think our UNT students will start getting early tips as of now to get their tickets ASAP since word is already out on yalls big and early purchases for this game. To me this is what college football is and has always been about. I used to go to old Southwest Conference Texas-based rivalries when the visitors most always brought 5,000 plus fans to the visitors stadium and.........all the SWC schools brought their marching bands to all conference games....yes, that was another league in another era.

I do wish CUSA opponent's marching bands would travel better than I've seen thus far, though.

Awesome! Respect for UTEP fans! Can't wait to see y'all rebound from your current woesAnd props to UNT for starting this thread. It's cool to talk about your own program's fan base, but starting a thread about how awesome a rival's fan base? Class! I see rep points in your future.

We'll have more than 1,500 out there. I just hope it's a good game.
