RE: Lance
The Pacers mix is terrible as currently constructed. They either need to let Lance walk and go back to being a slow, interior-oriented team or find someone to take Hibbert and/or West off their hands and turn their backcourt loose.

No other team out there would have 2 wings that can penetrate like Lance/PGeorge and then camp 2 bigs on the blocks looking for entry passes. It just makes no sense in the 2014 nba of wings who can get all the way to the bucket and bigs who can step out and hit shots. As much as I like Lance playing locally, I think he's better off going somewhere with more spacing on offense unless they're going to overhaul the roster.

Sources: L Stephenson & Pacers at impasse. Indy offers 5 yrs/$44 mill. Lance wants more, will talk to others. Chi, LAL, Hornets interested.

Lance can easily make 10 million a year, this offer is low for his value but this is a result of the Pacer's cap space.

Nearly a week after the Indiana Pacers offered talented but controversial guard Lance Stephenson a five-year, $44 million contract, the two sides remain far apart on a deal, according to sources close to the situation.

More from ESPN.com
Lance Stephenson is no longer an untouchable, toxic topic for the Mavericks' front office, writes Tim MacMahon. Story

Although his desire is to remain with the Pacers, a disappointed Stephenson began exploring the free-agent market after receiving what he felt was a low-ball offer on Tuesday, sources said.

Stephenson has drawn interest from the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers, although both teams have other free agents prioritized above Stephenson, according to sources.

Dallas, believing it likely will lose out on both LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony, will attempt to sign Chandler Parsons away from the Houston Rockets. The Mavericks also have Luol Deng and Trevor Ariza in their sights, sources said.

But Stephenson has also recently emerged as a target of the Mavericks. A month ago, or even a few weeks ago, Stephenson was not on Dallas' radar, but over the past few days the Mavericks have registered their interest, according to sources.

Dallas is intrigued by Stephenson's versatility. He led the NBA in triple-doubles with five last season, and his 7.2 rebounds per game, highest among the league's guards, could help a Mavericks team that was among the league's worst in rebounding.

Lance Stephenson, whose unusual tactics made headlines during the Eastern Conference finals against the Heat, averaged a career-high 13.8 points, 7.2 rebounds and 4.6 assists last season.

Like the Mavericks, the Lakers are targeting the summer's superstars -- James and Anthony -- ahead of Stephenson. They also have an interest in Deng and Ariza, but Stephenson remains a possibility should their other plans fail to materialize.

Meanwhile, the Pacers have not let their stalemate with Stephenson stop them from spending elsewhere. Last week, they agreed with guard C.J. Miles on a four-year, $18 million contract and added Croatian forward Damjan Rudez and center Lavoy Allen.

Thus far, the Pacers have been unwilling to increase their offer to Stephenson, and some league sources say they will not move from that stance.

Stephenson, for his part, believes he'll be an All-Star next season and is worth well above the $7.6 million the Pacers' offer would pay him.

RE: Lance
Paul George wants Stephenson return
Updated: July 12, 2014, 8:33 PM ET
Associated Press

AVON, Ind. -- Paul George believes the Pacers will be a stronger title contender with Lance Stephenson -- and all of his idiosyncrasies.

So on Saturday, George followed the company line and urged his friend and teammate to re-sign with Indiana.

For weeks, the Pacers have been speaking to Stephenson with a unified voice: They want him back to take one more shot at an NBA championship, something that seems much more plausible now that LeBron James' departure has broken up the Big Three Era in Miami.

"It's all on Lance's plate," George said as he took a break from the basketball pro camp he headlined in suburban Indianapolis. "I didn't have to deal with this because I was a restricted free agent. It's really up to Lance, but I will say I do want him to come back."

He's hardly alone.

Everyone from Pacers president of basketball operations Larry Bird to coach Frank Vogel to backup big man Lavoy Allen has stuck to the playbook since the offseason began. George, a two-time All-Star, joined the chorus Saturday, though he understands this is all part of the business.

When George signed a max deal just before training camp opened last year, Bird noted Stephenson was in the crowd and promised that Stephenson would be the next Pacers player to strike it rich. One way or the other, he will. Bird offered Stephenson a five-year, $44 million contract. But now the Pacers are stuck in waiting mode.

Stephenson is seeking a more lucrative deal, and now that the logjam in free agency has broken, a decision might not be far away.

He remains one of the more intriguing free agents still on the market.

Last season, Stephenson blossomed into one of the league's most versatile guards, rewarding the Pacers for their patience by averaging 13.8 points, 7.2 rebounds and 4.6 assists in 78 starts -- all career bests. The Brooklyn, New York, native also was the best rebounding guard in the NBA and led the league with five triple-doubles.

But his breakout season was tainted by his behavior.

Teammates were upset when Stephenson was goaded into his second technical foul in a March win over Miami and again when he publicly challenged James & Co. during the playoffs. Stephenson also got into a practice scuffle with teammate Evan Turner during the playoffs and was even criticized by Bird, one of Stephenson's biggest fans, after he blew into the ear of LeBron James during Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals.

The Heat won the series in six games and some believe Stephenson's actions could wind up costing him money, something that could help the Pacers keep their starting five together for another season.

"He knows we want him very, very badly," coach Frank Vogel said Friday. "Hopefully, we'll find a way to get it done."

Bringing back Stephenson has taken on greater urgency with James going back to Cleveland.

Suddenly, Miami, which eliminated Indiana from the playoffs each of the past three seasons, doesn't appear so imposing. And even though James is taking his talents to the shores of Lake Erie, posing a strong threat to the two-time defending Central champs, the Pacers may finally be in position to reach the NBA Finals for the first time since 2000 -- if Stephenson returns.

"It's very important," Allen said after re-signing with Indiana on Friday. "There were many games in the playoffs where he got us this team going and he carried us and everybody saw that."

Stephenson has been unusually quiet since free agency opened, even with his friends and teammates.

The Pacers haven't budged from their original offer because it would probably put them over the luxury tax threshold, something Bird has repeatedly said the Pacers won't pay.

Even George isn't sure what Stephenson, his 2010 draft classmate, will do.

"I've talked to him a few times, and I know how stressful it can be. I don't want to put any more on him," George said. "Once again, we've got our plates full (with chasing a title) but we like our chances."

He'd be making a ton more per year and have a longer contract if he wasn't a headcase. Smart move going with the short deal, assuming he matures between now and the deal's expiration.

RE: Lance
Hornets sign Lance Stephenson
Updated: July 16, 2014, 1:20 PM ET
By Chris Broussard | ESPN The Magazine

Free-agent guard Lance Stephenson will play for the Charlotte Hornets for the next three seasons. His contract is worth $27 million, league sources said.

The deal was signed early Wednesday morning after Hornets owner Michael Jordan, general manager Rich Cho, head coach Steve Clifford and associate head coach Patrick Ewing met with Stephenson and his representatives Tuesday night in Las Vegas.

Quote:Stephenson's Star Rising

By any metric, Lance Stephenson had the best season of his career in 2013-14. He also led the NBA with five triple-doubles.

Lance Stephenson Last Season
Career Rank
Min PG 35.3 1st
PPG 13.8 1st
FG pct 49.1% 1st
3-pt FG pct 35.2% 1st
RPG 7.2 1st
APG 4.6 1st
Win shares 7.4 1st
PER 14.7 1st
--ESPN Stats & Information

The contract, which includes a team option for the final season, ends Stephenson's productive yet volatile four-year stay with the Indiana Pacers.

The Pacers made Stephenson a five-year, $44 million contract offer on July 1. But Stephenson, who led the league in triple-doubles, felt the offer undervalued him.

"Lance is forever grateful for all the love he's received from Pacers fans. He is especially grateful to his teammates, [Pacers coach] Frank Vogel, [owner] Herb Simon, the Pacers management and most of all, Larry Bird," Stephenson's agent, Alberto Ebanks, said in a statement. "While we tried our best to come to the best possible terms for both sides, there was not sufficient flexibility in the terms of the contract, particularly the length of the contract.

"Reports throughout the negotiation process with Indiana have often strayed from the truth but suffice it to say that it was less about the money. Lance will miss the city, the team and the mentor who helped transform him into the dynamic player he has become. He looks forward to making a strong contribution and beginning a new chapter with the Charlotte Hornets."

The Pacers were unwilling to offer Stephenson a shorter deal, spanning two or three years, sources said. Indiana was also unwilling to increase its offer.

The Dallas Mavericks had a two-year, $20 million offer on the table to Stephenson, contingent on the Houston Rockets matching their offer for forward Chandler Parsons. If Houston had matched, Stephenson would have signed with Dallas, sources said.

Like many teams, the Hornets, while fans of Stephenson's play, had concerns about his antics and attitude. But sources say those concerns were alleviated in Tuesday's face-to-face meeting.

Pacers teammates were upset when Stephenson was goaded into his second technical foul in a March win over Miami and again when he publicly challenged LeBron James & Co. during the playoffs. Stephenson also got into a practice scuffle with teammate Evan Turner during the playoffs and was even criticized by Bird, one of Stephenson's biggest fans, after he blew into the ear of James during Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals.

Pacers center Roy Hibbert, though, tweeted Wednesday that he'll miss having Stephenson as a teammate.

Comments from Bird,

"I really feel bad about losing him," Bird said. "I hope it doesn't interfere with our relationship. But I did what I could possibly do to keep him here. Even if he didn't have any other offers, I was committed to giving him that $44 million because I believe in the kid. If you look at our roster, we have five or six guys in the last year of their deals, plus David (West) and Roy (Hibbert) can opt out, so don't you think I wanted to keep Lance and Paul (George) locked into long-term deals?" [...]

Bird could stomach this if Stephenson had left for much greener pastures, a lot more cash. But the argument can be made that he left for a worse deal.

"It's just disappointing," Bird said. "When I'd go to practices, when he was on, he was by far our best player. And he worked. If you work as hard as he does, you're going to get better. I'm going to miss the kid, no question. And he's growing up. That stuff he pulled in the playoffs, that was out of the blue. But I knew how good Lance was and the value he brought to our team."

Pacers made him a pretty good offer, hell of it looks like crazy money to me. I think Bird wants to get him back in 3 years. Pacers are the only team I follow some. Loved that rivalry with NY back in the 90's, Reggie Miller 04-cheers

I'm with ya on that rivalry SuperFly. Remember the game when Miller shot something like 3 three pointers in the span of 30 seconds to beat NY in a playoff game (I think) and Spike Lee about fell out of his chair puking? Classic!
