Btw, Mark Dantonio went 6-7 in his third season. I guess he is a horrible coach too.
Save it.
All those resources and talent at UM, and they piss it away because they're mentally stuck in the 70s.
Michigan was whipped by a better team that had better players and coaches.
Which should never be the case given Michigan's resources and history. If that isn't a coaching issue, what is it?
There are a couple issues. For starters, Michigan is still recovering from the RichRod era. RR had a recruiting class that had ONE OL in it. That’s insane. Then there is his God awful defensive recruiting. UM is paying for that now with lots of youth and lesser talented players playing.
Secondly, UM’s OL coach sucks. This happens. Sometimes big name schools get coaches who are terrible. MSU for example had Dan Roushar who was an horrendous OC.
Just because you have resources that does not mean you are immune from hiring poor coaches or coaches who are out of their depth, which is the case with Funk at UM. Funk coached with Hoke at SDSU and seemingly did an okay job. Here not so much.
I still think Hoke is a good coach. His track record at Ball State and SDSU tells me that he is. But he is going to have to do what John Beilein did after JB’s terrible third season and reevaluate his assistants. Clearly the job isn’t getting done to the standards Michigan football has set. UM, as you rightly noted, has too much resources and talent to be so poor on the offensive line.
The game today was an embarrassment and hopefully a wakeup call for Hoke.
I know this is an EMU forum but...
I did notice, but pretty much didn't care, but UofM was having problems in the middle of the OL this year.
Graham Glasglow who EMU recruited hard and went to UofM as a walk-on starts now at center I think.
A kid Kalis, I believe, has been starting inside. I believe he is lightly regarded.
Quite frankly, the middle of UofM's OL, is not top half of B1G-caliber. Taylor Lewan is the one stud on an otherwise mediocre line.
And as we learned all year
, when the OL fails, the offense fails, esp. against a team with a very solid defense.
Put Bronson Hill behind the NIU OL and he'd go for 1,500 yards. Easily.
(or put Hill on NIU behind their OL playing EMU and he'd go for 300 in one game. He'd kill our defense.).
