Personally, I think you should never publicly repeat the sort of thing he put out there unless you heard it yourself and are willing to stand behind it. The way it was written, I'm assuming he didn't hear it himself, but was repeating something that someone else told him. People lie and exaggerate to their buddies all the time.

Especially when they think they've been done wrong when the fact is, they couldn't play. Again, just look at Mickey's staff. It's a ridiculous accusation by someone who chooses not to put his name on it. He was obviously never even in the game and is talking about end zone stands being empty?

My main take from the article was not the double-hearsay allegation that Mickey made an ignorant, racist remark. The focus was on the way we trash and commodify our student-athletes and the lack of support from the students, in particular, for the program. That's not especially unique to JMU, but I will never, ever, understand the thinking of people who bother to get tickets and sit through 2 1/2 quarters, only to leave a close game an hour early. WTH?

It was absolutely a well-composed letter. It also has some quality points about fan support. However, if BRIAN STOUT is going to publicly put hearsay about an alleged racist remark online, he should have the scrote to post his name, BRIAN STOUT to the letter.

Yup. However, if I looked like that I might not put my name on it either. In seriousness, why would anybody believe some guy living in Europe who is grinding an axe about something that happened years ago after the fact? Is he really still that bitter that he didn't have the talent to play? The whole thing goes back to our society shifting from one of earning to one of entitlement.

Sure, a guy writing an "anonymous" letter because he has nothing better to do than whine about the fact that he was no good out of left field 3 years late is probably true. That's credible.

I'm not saying its credible or it's not, just that I wouldn't be nearly as surprised as some of you if it's true.

I agree. If he was done so wrong by JMU football and Mickey is such the racist that he implies, then he should have the stones to put his name on this....otherwise there is no credibility and this story dies with the previous 1000 deadspin articles that have no credible sources.

Deadspin is certainly entertaining, but most intelligent people take their stories with a grain of salt. I didn't start believing the Te'o story until I heard another two sources confirm.

Do walk-ons ever get cut? I had a friend who was a walk on under MM's tenure and he never even dressed but he never got cut. He knew he was never going to play but just kind of liked it and it was a good way to stay in shape. I did find it funny that his Bio said played for South Lakes High School. Hahaha. My dog could probably play for them. The guy had no accolades whatsoever that they could list?

I sure as **** don't have a whole lot of love for Mickey Matthews... However, I will stand with both closed fists risen and ready to strike at anyone who would call him a racist. How do I know MM is not a racist? He ****** over two of my friends (Flip and Drew D) in favor of starting a black Quarterback. Charles Barry and Justin Thorpe..

For calling a coach racist, he is not the politically correct one himself...

Nobody from JMU will care about this. The only people that will realize this was ever written about Mickey are the diehard fans, and it's been apparent for a while that no one from JMU cares what we think.

Also, anybody with eyeballs can now pathetic the level of student support is at football games; it's not like there's anything new in this letter other than the extremely shaky allegations of racism that the author didn't witness firsthand.

If the walk-on really sucks, isn't contributing anything in practice, and is seen as detrimental to the team, you better believe they'll be cut. Not saying this kid was any of those things, but based on the self-entitled nature of his little rant, it wouldn't surprise me.

And I was thinking the exact same thing about the quality of the South Lakes football team.

As many of you have stated: It does not fit with MM's character to make such a remark. Does he say things he shouldn't? most definitely. But I can't see him saying that.

To the author: welcome to adulthood. Life is hard, not fair; and no one owes you anything.

Setting aside the racist remark ... the sentiments this guy has are pretty much 100% in line with the players I have known throughout the years and their thoughts on position-changes, getting over that "honeymoon" phase of recruiting ... and becoming quite bitter about the program. Maybe I just knew too many guys that fell through the cracks and didn't make the impact they probably thought they would when being recruited to JMU ... but that's at least what I know.

This article really doesn't change my mindset regarding the program. I think it's time for a change anyway.

Yeah, nothing that he said isn't pretty much the norm at most D1 schools that offer scholarships.

I can imagine a lot of players, especially those who aren't top tier talent on the team are a bit shell shocked when they get to campus.

A quick anecdotal story to show it's not just a generational thing either. The father of a good friend of mine was their high school team's star basketball player and broke virtually every record in the books. He got offered to a top basketball school. He just assumed that he would keep dominating the way he always had but when he got there he was stunned to find that everyone was at least as good as he was. I don't think he played a lot of minutes and eventually dropped out and/or transferred. This was back in the 60s maybe.
