I am not making any comment on how good or bad any of these individuals are at their jobs, nor am I suggesting there are specific Rice grads who would be better or even qualified for these positions. I am merely pointing out that there isn't a single coach with Rice connections (beyond current employment) on staff.
Joe Johnson, Quality Control - North Texas 2011
Anthony Steward, Off Grad Asst - Kansas 2012
Adrian Mayes, Def Grad Asst - Kansas 2009
Sean Edmondson, Def Grad Asst - Texas St 2012 (son of Larry Edmondson)
Ryan Cantrell, Off Grad Asst - Kansas 2008
Lance Weaver, Video Coord - Arkansas St 2008
The rest of the coaches have enough experience that just saying their undergrad school or recent coaching experience doesn't really add anything. Suffice to say, not a single individual played at Rice. Personally, I'd love to see Rice be a coaching pipeline where we help former players who want to get into coaching get early experience at the collegiate level (probably as grad assistants) so they don't have to toil for 20 years at the high school level. Obviously the former player would need to be qualified, smart, driven, etc. But I'd be shocked if there wasn't a sufficient supply of former players meeting those qualifications. Instead, Rice seems to be a pipeline for Kansas graduates, which really confuses the everlasting hell out of me.

RE: UNT Game Thread
Coaches tend to hire who they know and have experience with... which is sometimes why it is so hard to change things. Coaching is very much an apprenticeship profession as far as I can tell. MOST professions, you go to school and learn how to do things... but not coaching. Does that even make sense in this day and age?
I would seriously consider hiring some coaches/retired coaches to teach classes at Glasscock. The constituencies are numerous, including foreigners looking to learn enough about the games to be more excited about what is happening because they understood the nuances rather than just the obvious... spouses looking to understand why their significant others are glued to the screens... youth coaches looking to learn some new techniques... parents looking to tutor their kids... private coaches looking to "up" their skills... fans looking to increase their understanding... It is seriously potentially all-encompassing.
Seems to me there is a potentially HUGE market for this. I'd start by making the OG the dean... maybe see if Hatfield would come back and teach the geometry of "option football". I'm somewhat serious about this. How would it impact Rice athletics if we were viewed as the place where the great coaches retired and became teachers? Get some of our Doctors to talk about medicine for young athletes... you think the Med Center might want in on that? Regina Cavanaugh can talk about the physics of field events. Get the physics and materials science guys to do some work-up on the impact of equipment design on performance... you think Champion and Rawlings might sponsor some of that?
Rice could somewhat become Sports-U for fans, and most coaches in the country would have an automatic affinity for our programs.
I mean seriously... Bailiff puts on a seminar for new Rice students unfamiliar with football.
Why should we stop there?
WHY CAN'T sports and education go hand-in-hand?

Justin Hill and Drew Mehringer followed Yancy McKnight and MENSA OC to Iowa State as GAs. Mehringer then further followed MENSA to Ohio State: http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/sports/...70385.html
Hill is now at Baylor in the S&C division: http://www.baylor.edu/athleticperformanc...p?id=72069
Anybody know of other recent Rice players in collegiate coaching? Of course Chase Clement was a offensive QC for one spring here. Maybe he'll return to that down the line.
