I think generally not really being in a metro area helps attendance. Without actual evidence to back me up, I feel like most schools with the highest attendance are in somewhat random places. UNT is in the metro area, but it's something like a 45 minute drive to Dallas. This is an advantage for UNT, being not exactly in the big city but being able to draw from it.
Not being a small private school is what really helps. As a Rice fan you know the obstacles that creates when it comes to growing a fan base. What UNT had been lacking was wins, facilities, and a conference schedule our fans could get excited about. Now we have all three, and fans are starting to show up. There is no excuse. North Texas should consistently outdraw SMU.
North Texas has wanted an invitation to C-USA for a very long time. I think C-USA made a smart move by adding UNT. Just wish it would have happened sooner.

Agree. Wish CUSA was not losing Tulane and Tulsa.

UNT can't win the West even if they win out unless Tulane loses 2 of their next 4.

Tulane? With who and where they are playing all those who's makes that a possibility. Today will be interesting at FAU, too.
You are obviously a Ball State sympathizer, too, right?
Whatever the combination needs to be I want North Texas to get a bowl invite to the Heart of Dallas Bowl against a Big 10 school; preferably the Iowa Hawkeyes since we have some personnel and Hayden Fry Coaching Tree history with that school. Tall order I know, but lets see what happens.

You are absolutely correct. North Texas must win out and Tulane must drop 2 for the Mean Green to be the West champs.

nothing I said was subjective or a slight to NT, simply adding to the previous comment by pointing out that winning out isn't enough, they need Tulane to lose at least 2. What does that have to do with Ball State?

Revise that to 1 of their next 3.

I guess the better question is: Why does anyone from the MAC even care what North Texas does? Are we on your board talking about how NIU has mostly a wuss' of a schedule (UMass yesterday) to be able to cake-walk to a #17 ranking and most likely keep that ranking this week, too? Maybe they could be ranked #24 or #25 but come on now....#17? (NIU's "stud?" RB looks as though they might have had to use a calendar to time his 40).

How's tonight's attendance of 22,835 compare to a typical Saturday game?
It depends on 2 things: weather and W/L record.
I expect next saturday to surpass 22k for homecoming. My guess is 24k or 25K. We have yet to sell out the new stadium. That will most likely happen if we can maintain a competitive team for our annual series starting soon against SMU.
I Bank On The Right Person Eventually Reading This Oft' Theme and Personal Pet Project--UNT Football Attendance--Sometimes It Only Takes The Right One To Start Making The Appropriate Changes To Completely Alter A Campus Culture-------For The Football Part of All This, Coach McCarney Has Begun This Change This Fall But........We Cannot Expect Him To Hit The Streets of Denton To Sell FB Tickets To The Masses....Can We?
Being a metropolitan university (not my description, but the Texas Higher Education Coodinating Board's description of UNT) but once we finally happen upon the "A-Ha!" experience (or revelation) as to put a Mustang Mania or even a UTSA type of "get out all the new fan's faces and butts inside Apogee", we will wonder why 31,000 was ever made to be the mountain it has consistently been made to be in our campus culture for just about forever.
Winning will do much for attendance now, but for a metro university in a pro oriented area it simply will not be an annual end all. Large groups promotions (still amazingly a stranger to our Athl.Dept-all these years later---see Wing Zone for proof) will be the only thing that will take us over the top for 6 or 7 Game Days each Fall.
With such promotions, Apogee crowds of 26K or 27K crowds would then become 31,000 "EVERY" Game Day in Mean Green Country. To accept less will soon (I predict) become unacceptable with upcoming new leadership in the Hurley Admin. Bldg. My bet says our new upcoming UNT president will agree once he (or she) gets the full story from I'd bet more than a handful of fans/alums; that is, those who will not be too shy to share with him (or her) a few facts and data concerning why our attendance at UNT has not been commensurate with our main campus enrollment and DFW area alumnus growth the last 25 years.
Our significant growth the past quarter of a century should more than manifest itself at the Apogee turnstiles and at this juncture it just simply has not but...........I think it will with winning as the new variable with all of this but still coupled with a well planned large groups promotions program .

What in the world is wrong with you, why are you being so defensive? How can I spell it out any plainer- I DID NOT SAY ANYTHING DEROGATORY ABOUT NORTH TEXAS. Nor did I imply anything negative. All I said was that if they win out its not enough for them to win their division, they need some help from Tulane. How is that offensive to you?????
To answer your silly little defensive question directly- the reason why I "care" about what North Texas does is because a.) I live in Texas and follow the Mean Green, b.) I 'm a big fan of their marching band, and c.) I'm a fan of the Ohio Bobcats, a team that beat UNT. As an Ohio fan I WANT NORTH TEXAS TO SUCCEED. I hope they win the West and Marshall wins the East because Ohio played both teams.
I don't give a rip about Ball State or Northern Illinois, I don't know why you think I do. Now please, stop being so overly sensitive and enjoy your team's success. Congrats to North Texas!
