Middle Tennessee and other TN Board of Regents institutions remain united....
The Interim President of the University of Memphis speaks publicly about keeping the existing member institutions intact and is not in favor of creating a separate Board.

The Memphis Tigers message board is about to melt once they get this news.

Is this good news for MT and if so, why?

It is non-news. Memphis has been wanting their own board for a long time. With the political and budget situation in TN, there was no way it was going to happen in the next 5 years. I'm guessing the current president is facing reality instead of not wanting their own board.

At least, it's on the table, subject matter wise. Never really got past 1st base here when the UABot screwed UAB and UAH over.

I was kind of hoping they'd get it.

Would open up a door for us to at least change our freakin' Juco-sounding name.

Nah, they are a resilient bunch and bounce back quickly from adversity. One minute they love him, the next minute they hate him.

Did you guys read the article?

Quote:While the university has more autonomy than most people think, Martin said it is slowed by “administrative stuff” required by the Board of Regents. One of his goals is to eliminate state-imposed barriers that affect how U of M manages its affairs.

“There are administrative things that slow us down. There are processes that are cumbersome, there are things to need to be changed and the Board of Regents has basically said ‘we agree,’ ” Martin said.

“What I’ve learned is, you get that stuff out of the way, it is our university. No one says from Nashville, we want you to spend this amount of money on physics and this amount of money on math. Nobody.”

Sounds OK to me.

In Tennessee, it's a bit different from the Alabama trustee burden you suffer under, where UAT, UAB, and UAH operate under the same BOT umbrella.

The University of Tennessee system has its own UT BOT. The state universities--Memphis, MT, Austin Peay, ETSU, etc., have a state university BOT separate from the UT system.

Stupid system. Each university should have their own board of regents.

At one time, UT-k received 50% of all state higher education dollars. The other schools were left dividing the leftovers (including the community colleges).

A lot of backroom deals in the old days, from what some folks tell me.

So don't let the orange folks tell you that they are self-sufficient. They used those Memphis and Nashville tax dollars for decades upon decades.
