RE: It's Game Week!!!
Dear steve,
And what should we hope for in Eastern's case? A defense to finally work? I don't think that is possible. An offense that can score more than twenty-five points? Again, maybe a Christmas wish.
If the real Eastern team shows up, the score will be 55-18, in favor of Toledo. Like I have said on other posts and other threads, this team has cashed it in. It's over.

I don't think they have mailed it in.. I think the problem is coaching.. I think the kids are doing what they are told and are following instructions from the coaches.. I must say that we are. Poor tackling team. I just can't believe the missed tackles we have in the secondary or how badly out db covering the pass.. I've stated this before. The coaching is very bad, the teaching is even worst..

RE: It's Game Week!!!
The coaching staff with a few exceptions knows they will be looking for jobs come Thanksgiving. The offense has some talent but the defense not only needs coaching but a huge infusion of talent. The quick fix is JUCOs, FCS or Div II transfers that might be eligible and could play at the next level or of course high school recruits. The rebuilding begins-AGAIN.

With a good QB, you can be competitive in 2 years. Need some JUCO's-All Purpose Back, 3-4 good Receiver, and a 100 meter type slotback, etc. Get Roback the tools he needs and a competant back-up. Focus on Offense. That will get you competitive quickly. Then build a defense over the next few years. Hire a fulltime head recruiter.

On a positive note it seems the placekicking unit is back in rhythm the past two games.

BS!!!! Coaches should not have to teach DI college players how to freakin' tackle! If you want to blame the coaches for bad schemes or poor recruiting fine, but tackling? I am not buying that. Tackling has to do with effort and heart!

Good tackling is technique, technique, technique. Plenty of players have heart and effort. Nothing beats a great form tackle.

Let's just say that Ron English has taught and emphasized tackling for years and years. He was DC at Michigan and Louisville. I have zero doubt that his players are properly coached on form tackling. The fact that they are not executing the coaching is not his fault. If players are out of position to make plays, that's another story. But all this piling on English is crap. I want players to take personal accountability for their awful play. Coaches cannot get out there and play for them.

The fastest way out from a tactical standpoint? Run the option. If you have decent athletes -- not great, just decent -- and you work on the execution, you'll be competitive quickly.
You have to pass enough to keep teams honest, and if you run the offense well, and your QB has an arm like Roback's, you can complete a dozen passes a game on 15 attempts.
Once you get reasonably competitive, you can build your recruiting chops, bring in some higher-powered athletes and branch out into a wider variety of sets.
You hold the ball enough to keep your defense off the field, and you recruit heavily on the defensive side for DBs because they prevent large-scale damage.
And hire a head coach who has succeeded well on a lower level. Stay away from OCs and DCs who lack experience in running a whole program.
