My View of the BG Game in Perspective
I did not state it strongly enough in "My View" that, in my mind, this was the season for Rockets. Lose it and say bye-bye to any shot at the MACC. I was very surprised by the Rockets jumping out 21-0. I was not that surprised to see the Falcons rally but when they took the lead it was looking very blue. As it turned out it was Midnight Blue! They was an epic game in this series and maybe just as critical for this season.

Okay then:

What To Look For:

• Rockets to pressure QB Johnson from the Falcons’ left end on rushes and corner blitzes
o Yes, with success
• Falcons to line up in an I-formation and passing out of it
o Maybe once
• Tight coverage on TE Alex Bayer from Rockets LBs
o Not tight enough
• WR Ronnie Moore fly sweep coming in motion from left wide out position
o Moore ran the sweep but not from a wide out position
• RB (Greene) lines up on the outside hip of the OT then loops back for the handoff – a variation of the counter trey
o Yep with success including the last BG touchdown
• Falcons to put seven and eight into the box to stop the run and force Owens to throw the ball
o Yep and it almost worked in the second half
• Rockets to have another multiple sack game getting to Johnson at least three times
o Okay so I’m only half right as four Rockets combined for six sacks including Junior Sylvestre’s three sacks
• BG’s running game to feature pulling linemen to get Greene seams outside the tackles
o Yep, easy call as that is their bread n butter running play
• Tripled stacked wide receivers with the back wide out dropping back for an apparent screen pass but Johnson hands to RB on quick-hitter
o Used the triple stack formation only once or twice; the Rockets had too much penetration for this play to work
• Reedy to be more involved in the running game on flanker sweeps
o Nope
• Flacons to put pressure on Penza
o First one of his two punts
• Rockets OL to spread out the Falcons defense
o Yes and it worked exceptional well in the first half
• Rocket D getting hands up to deflect at least two of Johnson’s passes
o Only one deflection if my recollection is correct
• Rockets to isolate WRs on CB’s one-on-one using out-and-up deep patterns
o Yep, the OPI on Zo, and the two overthrows to Reedy and Olack; the TD fade pass to Russell was a straight up pattern
• On fourth and short BG to use a play action pass to the short side with two receivers; WR doing a quick out and a TE slipping behind the defense
o Their only fourth and short was at the goal line but a false start resulted in a 23 yard FG
• Falcons kickoff team bunches toward the left side kicking to the left side of the field from the left hash mark to contain Reedy
o Yes
• Rockets TO with quick pitch to RB to hit the edge
o Nope – guess they’re saving this play for a close game ;-)
• Chilly with a high of 50 and winds out of the WSW at 14 mph with gusts to 25 mph having an effect on the kicking game
o Not for Jeremiah Detmer!

A nice cherry on top: Greene was held to less than 100 yards net. Ninety-six yards net with 19 yards in TFL. I don't believe that he has anywhere near this loss of yardage in any game this season.

The Rockets ran for 242 yards with just 130 yards in the air.

NOTHING bothers Detmer. Coach interviewed post game said his kick out of the endzone may have been the most important play in that final defensive stand and I concur.

Totally agree...that was huge and didn't allow them to get field position.

Absolutely HUGE. Sure got my attention as I wasn't expecting that against a pretty strong breeze.

Detmer may be the best Beckman UT recruit.

Detmer came to Toledo due to Tim Williams kicking camp. It was JD's only offer. There was a big falling out between Golesh, Beckman and Williams and Williams was not a consult or running camps for Toledo until Campbell and Watson teamed up. Hopefully with Williams back we can get another quality kicker and punter for the future

Sounds like Campbell is a little smarter than his old boss.

RE: My View of the BG Game in Perspective
High school fans will be high school fans but three Rocket recruits stand out to me in recent years for the support they got on the prep boards as "steals." This from not just fans of the schools but from posters who had seen a lot of players across the state: Dortch, Detmer, Hunt.
