Well over 500 yards offense after a slow start and we dominated an opponent we were expected to beat. The defense really stepped up when it counted and overcame the injury to Mouchantaf. 6-2 and bowl eligible. Sweet

I still seriously question this offense against a quality opponent (and let's not forget who we racked up the yardage against the past two weeks). Despite running at will in the first half, McHargue started out 2-8 passing...and that's against a gawd awful defense...and playing at home. Sorry, there's no excuse for that. Play calling is still hugely suspect; especially in critical 3rd down situations.

FIRST BACK-TO-BACK BOWL ELIGIBLE SEASONS FOR RICE since....

1996 and 1997 (7-4 both years)

Just thought I'd clear that up in case you read or heard otherwise elsewhere :)

Slow start, fast finish. Overall, a good game. Plenty of room for improvement, though, and we will need to improve to win the next 4 games.

Glad to see Jayson Carter get his first carry. If we ever combine a fast start with a fast finish, he may play the entire fourth quarter.

Julius White, game ball.

6-2.

Announcers said it was the first time to be bowl eligible in back to back seasons since 60 & 61, but weren't there a couple of Hatfield teams that were eligible but just couldn't find a home?

Early weather forecast for the UNT game: cool, humid, rain that morning but clearing at game time.

HA beatcha to it by a minute!!!

in the announcer's "defence", Duarte made the same oversight in his writeup in the Chronicle.

Presuming Rice is extended a bowl bid (which we can safely presume given the conference's bowl tie-ins) it will be Rice's first season to actually PARTICIPATE in back to back bowl games since 60-61.

ETA: Also eligible in 2001 at 8-4 in addition to the '96-'97 Back to back

It was great to see the team put together a good game today. If McHargue connects on a couple of throws where our receivers were open, the game is absurd. But he still made some good throws, as evident by his yards per completion. Our WRs and RBs played well, and our defense brought the hammer.

Let's see if we can bring this sort of play to a better team and make some noise the rest of the year. This is how we should have been winning the last few games, and let's hope our guys see that now and extrapolate this to the rest of the year.

If I knew that Rice was going to be bowling this often, I would have bought the shoes instead of renting them.

THE most satisfying win I can remember. We ran the ball well and executed against man coverage.... PLUS, we maintained intensity and kept the pressure on. We can always do better, but that effort and execution will beat anyone on our schedule, including those not yet decided.

Well done...

And White deserves the game ball. No doubt about it. Play/effort of the season.

Really important win in my eyes because McHargue's deep passes might keep defenses honest the rest of the year.

Our defense just plays so well fundamentally. We don't have amazing athletes but outside of the few plays a game they get burned on, it's just nice to see in position to make play after play after play.

I loved seeing Jayson Carter. Boo to UTEP for not giving him a clear path to the goalline (I keed, I keed).

What's Moochie's injury? What about Bauer (he didn't dress up again).

BTW, sorry to pile on a team when their luck is down, but I was not impressed with that UTEP coach at all. They lose 45-7 and they end up attempting 12 - maybe 13 - passes for the game? What's the point of running the ball so much when you're down by 38? I didn't think the back-up was that bad and they had 1 or 2 good receivers. I just didn't understand their offensive or defensive gameplan at all.

Yes. 7-4 in '96 and again in '97. There weren't as many bowls back then, and almost all of them were tied to conferences we weren't in.

'92 and '93 (each 6-5 with a W over Sam) were not bowl eligible but would have been under the current rules.

Today: I was a little concerned at the start but it turned into a satisfying win. Loved that Carter got a carry (and a great response from the crowd).

Covington, Gaines, and Callahan would start for a LOT of teams.

The other defenders may not be "amazing" but IMO the overall talent level is very good by non-major-conference standards.

Mouchantaf looked like a serious knee injury. Pretty sure he is done. Bauer had his knee scoped. Hopefully he will be back for UNT. Skinner played great in his absence. Winship really stepped up today as well in Mouchantaf's place.

Great all around effort today. Offense had a few shaky moments early in each half, but got it on track. Good percentage on 3rd down today, where we have struggled so far this year. Need to keep that up. Defense played a heck of a game. 364 yards allowed today, but 101 of that was given up after we were up 45-7 and playing backups.

Quick turnaround for the UNT game. Biggest game of the year.

To my regret, this was the second straight week I could neither see or listen to the game. Congratulations to Coach Bailiff, his staff and the players for the second straight winning season. No matter who the opposition, this is a great step forward for the program. Geaux Owls!
