Sounds like it was promising. It means nothing in the grand scheme of things but its a start. We will be a much different team so expectations are a little lower so hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised in how things turn out this year.

It sounds like we looked pretty good yesterday and beat a College of Charleston team that was 24-11 last year with 4 starters back. That's pretty hopeful with so many new players.

I'm not saying this isn't the case, but has any team actually come back and said they lost their secret scrimmage?

Neil Watson and Jerrold Brooks will miss the first 2-4 games for us this season. That's our starting backcourt for those who are unaware.

They were playing our former coach Dougie Wojoke (Wojcik) so they probably did actually win. Their team is probably farther along than his is.

Oh I agree they probably won, I was just asking if anybody had ever heard of their team losing the "secret scrimmage"?

Yeah, that's a must-win for us with or without them.

Star: Julian Washburn, averaged 12.3 points last year but improved to 18 points a game in the last four games (Houston, Rice, Memphis and SMU). Was selected to the all defensive team last year and third team all conference. I think he is the best man to man defender in CUSA. Last season he had these results against other teams best offensive players: Tulane-Josh Davis 9 pts. & 8 pts., ECU-Kemp 10 pts., Marshall-Pittman 11 pts., Tulsa-Haralson 0 pts. & 10 pts, UCF-Sykes 10 pts., USM- Davis 7 pts., Houston-House 2 pts., SMU-Jones 7 pts. He doesn't get the publicity because he isn't a shot blocker or a guy with a lot of steels. He just defends the other teams best player and almost always holds them below their season average.

Top Freshmen: Vince Hunter averaged 26.5 points, 14 rebounds, 4 blocked shots and 4 steels as a senior last year. Rated as #98 player from the class of 2013 and the #7 player in the state of Michigan. Coach Floyd has stated several times that Hunter is the most athletic player on our team.

Sleeper: CJ Cooper was a reserve most of last year. Came on strong at the end of the year averaging 15 pts. in two CUSA tournament games (20 vs. USM). He shot 40.5% from the field and 38.5% from three point. Coach Floyd has stated several times that he is the most improved player on the team.

Scottie Haralson was not Tulsa's best offensive player.

You are right his average was .8 below your number one scorer James Woodard. Maybe if Washburn hadn't held him to 0 points in game one (0-8) and 9 in game two, he would have been you leading scorer.

Love it but disagree... Matt wilms if he stays healthy will be top freshman... Been saying this for a year now that guy can become a game changer!

The stars
It is hard to tell. They will literally have to play with great effort just to go .500 this year so there may not be any one star to pull out games. (quote from PirateMarv)

The Star
Pierra Henry. It's his team and the team runs through him. He can pretty much score at will when he wants to. We'll need him to look to score this year and not pass open looks to someone else.

Top Freshman
We only have two, but I guess I'll go with Marcus Bryan. I don't really expect much out of either of our freshmen though. Although not really a freshman, Shawn Lester is probably the most likely to have an impact in his first season.

Assist
I actually think Denzel Ingram will lead us here and no Henry. He should see 25+ minutes per game since he is the only other player that can play PG.

Sleeper
Although he was a solid contributor last year, I'm going to say Terrence Williams. He shot 37% from three the last 13 games of the season and word is he's been knocking them down consistently in practice now too. If he truly has developed a consistent three point shot, he is the best player on the team and could score 15ppg or more.

I'd agree with your first two but I'll stick with the top "Newcomer" that SJ started it with and go with Lester. I don't expect him to be a world beater, but a few reports have him already being the best slasher on the team, and he can get up pretty good. We'll see how much he contributes, but he will get the PT to do so.

Sleeper... I'll go with Mike Thorne. I don't think we need him to average crazy numbers, we just need the presence without the fouls and for him to clean up offensively, and if he can, keep the D honest so Clayton isn't getting too many double teams. A line of 6 ppg, 6 rpg, 1 bpg would be serviceable.

But it is true. They are a really young team. I think that they are talented, but when you look at the facts there are only 2 or 3 guys with substantial experience. Maybe they will fool me, but every time that I have witnessed really young teams; I have always saw a lot of growing pains. Look at FAU football team. They are really young team, but they have a lot of talent; just no experience at winning.

College of Charleston returned an upperclassmen team that went 24-10 last year and has all but one key player back. We have 3 sophmores and 2 freshman in our top 7, who have played virtually none. Scores I heard it sounded like be beat them solidly. I think that's pretty hopeful showing to be this far along in October the first time stepping on a court together than a veteran team that has won games.

Blazer to answer your question. Everyone knew we lost the NC State scrimmage last year. The only good news out of it was that Guilmette played well and he did start the season as a solid contributor before getting injured.

Whatever. I predicted top 4-6 finish when seniors starters Armstrong and Straughn were still here. After we lost them I have taken a nothing but wait and see approach to this season and said I really didn't know what to expect with so many new players.

I have always voiced my concerns over our post depth after they left. We are one injury away from our 2 centers from disaster. For what it's worth the last month I've even said I thought our ceiling to floor was probably anywhere from 75-175 in the nation because I really didn't know and that we had to stay healthy to even achieve that. This scrimmage was a pretty good sign though. I thought we'd finish like 75-100 last year, so I really don't know where people get these wild exceptions from me.

Hope that doesn't go all the way to Depaul for you guys.

I think they're counting the two exhibition games in Brooks' suspension so he should only miss the Jackson State regular season game and be back for DePaul. Not all bad since it will give Houston (JUCO transfer PG) a lot of playing time going into that game.

I haven't heard a firm timeline for Watson, but from the hearsay, it could be Lousiville before he's back in the fold. Even if we rush him, I don't he's back for DePaul.

RE: Preseason basketball player predictions
For Southern Miss:

Star:
I don't think there is one guy. I'll wager that at least 6 different guys will lead the team in scoring at least 2 games a piece. Watson, Brooks, Craig, Boardingham, Brown, and Armelin are all capable scorers in their own way. Watson is the "straw that stirs the drink" as they say, so I'll give him the nod in this category.

Freshaman:
Matt Bingaya gets the nod by default. I expect Hayes to be a big-time contributor in time, but he's out for the season with an injury. I just don't know if Bingaya will have enough court time to get much recognition given the number of upper classmen we have.

Newcomer:
Aaron Brown seems to be getting a lot of attention. He's taking Dwayne Davis' spot and seems to be a capable scorer, but lacks the same outside shot that Davis had. He's a better rebounder out of that 3 spot than Davis was and is a pretty good defender.

Sleeper:
I'll give this to Jeremiah Eason. He's not going to do much in OOC play because he came in out of shape. If he trims down like I expect him to do, he'll be as good as Boardingham by the time conference play rolls around.
