"We are going for the end zone here." Interesting choice of words.

It would mean something else in San Francisco.

in san Francisco they would be talking about nfl instead of bammer. you do realize that the proportional lgb population of san Francisco is very similar to that of Atlanta

Only if we give. While there will be multiple corporate donations it's time we put our money on the table too.

Folks can donate towards specific causes (ie, athletics), but it would be nice to know if there was something specific the athletics department was seeking funding for (ie, football support facility/fieldhouse).

This campaign has the potential to transform UAB into the premier university in the state.

Don't expect any of this money to go towards a football stadium. You'll be sorely disappointed.

Maybe not a stadium, but athletic facilities like a football support building, new practice field/facility, etc. Athletics are definitely one of the items being incorporated into this campaign. However, it is not clear whether or not the administration would pursue any stadium plans should they get more than anticipated funding directed towards athletics.

A new fieldhouse is already in the works. When people talk about "unspoken facilities" and "upgrades to athletics" they're talking about the stadium, and I think that is going to be the cloud hanging over this campaign from an athletics perspective the whole time.

I haven't heard anything official that would suggest the fieldhouse is guaranteed. All I had even heard was that it was desired and being considered. If they are seeking funds for it, it should be identified and named as a project for which they are seeking funds through the capital campaign.

Until someone in an official capacity has the testicular fortitude to convey such an announcement and that it is one of true substance, this is my take as well....Which leads me to wonder...What's the point in giving them a fieldhouse and practice field if a new stadium is not on the table as well? It's like giving someone a car without an engine. How's this going to improve recruiting and attendance? Just asking...Re-sheath your swords!

Well, that is certainly going to hurt donations to athletics. Personally I don't want to donate money to a program that doesn't have the support from the institution (that includes the Board of Trustees) and has the possibility of getting shut down or, even worse, allowed to flounder in mediocrity.

That said, I understand how the politics of the situation works and I don't expect Mackin or anyone else to throw themselves in front of the train. However, I wish everyone would just put it all out on the table and air the dirty laundry and say what they mean (including Finis and Bryant), come up with a plan with defined goals in terms of attendance, money raised, performance on the field, etc so that there is something to work towards. Just "the cardiology department sucks so go get your house in order" and "improve support" is not an acceptable plan and is so open ended and nebulous, how do you know when you can go back? And, if at the end of the day it's never going to happen anyway, I'd rather my money and support not be wasted on something that is embarrassing to the things the university actually does well.

Mackin mentioned a fieldhouse to me in conversation around this time last year, sounded pretty confident that it would happen. But, I can't see the effectiveness of having a fieldhouse on campus without the stadium to go with it. But, that's just me...

The fieldhouse will be built, where the plan says, right beside the OCS site.

God, we're such pessimists. I know why, but we've raised nearly half a billion dollars in what, a couple of months? Think about that a second. We'll raise more. Get that ship well under way, then start an outright public drive to raise money for the OCS. They'll have nothing to ***** about then, and if we raise the money ourselves we can spit in their eye and tell them to go pee up a rope.

Cannot begrudge you on this assessment at all. I didn't like the condescending tones from those bas**** trustees, either, saying what I read between the lines to mean, "know your place and shut your mouths, we're the athletics powerhouse school, you stick to medicine, research and education, or else." I'm with you, all cards on the table, tired of UAB having to meet these "phantomic" expectations and requirements, only to be shot down and told to meet another one time after time. They're sitting back laughing their ass off at making UAB athletics jump through one flaming hoop after another with little or nothing to show for it after all this time.
