No one called police...?
Gotta really feel sorry for his young man's family and the EMU community. Unreal.
From the article: "Six people heard gunshots, and at least one person walked past the body of Demarius Reed last weekend. But no one called police until hours after Reed, a promising football player, died of multiple bullet wounds in the stairwell of an off-campus apartment near Eastern Michigan University."

RE: No one called police...?
Friend of mine from GR lived in that apt complex for a few years from 01-03. I think not only what stood out to me was that no one called police but apparently people saw his dead body in the hallway and thought he was just "passed out."
Sorry, unconscious bodies in the hallway are always a big red flag.

1 murder, 2 rapes and 2 assaults. Not a place I would want one of my kids to be.

My daughter almost went there to play softball, then plans changed abruptly. Kinda glad.

According to the article, the rapes were on campus -- the 2 assaults were at different apartments off-campus. And I have a feeling (unfortunately) rapes are all too common on any campus on any given day. But the cold-blooded murder of a football player (or any college student, or ANYone for that matter) doesn't make any sense whatsoever. And how do you walk right past a body in a hallway? We'll never know, but had just one passerby just cared enough to call 911, maybe this young man would still be alive today. It must be amazingly difficult for the team to be going through the daily rigors of practice and classes with this cloud over them.

Anthony - Rape does not make any sense either. It is a violent crime perpetrated on an individual. To imply otherwise is just wrong.

All of the sudden, our phone bill is unaffordable. $240?!?!?

RE: No one called police...?
We have a crime problem in Ypsilanti. Thing is, most of the people on our EMU board want to bury their heads in the sand with mindsets like "crime happens everywhere" or " it's no worse than it has ever been". That attitude is a great way to assure that nothing changes. I'm concerned because I'm a father, and I wouldn't send my son to EMU even if it was his school of choice. As an alum, I can't tell you how much that pisses me off.
Our campus is tremendous and relatively safe. HOWEVER, we struggle to take care of our students who live off campus.
Bottom line: Ypsilanti townies are bad news, man. Always have been. Drug addicts, thieves and rapists galore. I think EMU should force its students to live on campus for their first three years. That would move things in the right direction.

Woah dude!!! Back up... Back WAY up my friend!!! There's not a cell in my body that would EVER condone rape! For goodness sake! I simply pointed out that the article said the rapes happened on campus not off campus. Now that I re-read my post I can see how it might have been misinterpreted... But let me be PERFECTLY clear... In my opinion, rapists AND murderers should be locked UNDER the jail... I'm sure we all know that rapes occur everyday in campuses across the country -- and tragically, we NEVER hear about them. In NO WAY was I attempting to compare rapes to murder in my post. To do so would be asinine. They are both violent and tragic crimes that affect the victim and the victim's friends and loved ones for eternity. The perpetrators of both crimes must pay the highest possible price... To suffer the pain of rape is something none of us can ever imagine... The victims of rape have to live with that pain for the rest of their lives. There is no circumstance where rape or murder can EVER be excused. Period. I truly hope there's zero ambiguity now.

Thanks for the follow up Anthony. Did not think it sounded like something you would advocate, but reading it was very ambiguous.

They should could clear out those sketchy apartments on Leforge near peninsular place. Maybe buy them out and renovate them to make them dorm /apartments for students Only cold go along with making students live on campus for a while. There is no reason why those apartments near the river and between the nice part of superior Township and campus should be so full of bad people.

Thanks for pointing out that I was unclear! Appreciate it! Forums are cool, but sometimes, emotions, nuance and clarity can get lost amid the words (especially when I don't proofread)...
When I was a freshman at Western (late 80s) I vaguely remember an incident on campus where a student was raped (or killed? Honestly, I forget). I do remember there was a huge push for campus safety afterwards. Police call boxes went up everywhere on campus. Curious, how is campus safety at Western these days?

I keep thinking about what this kid's parents are going through. And I can't help thinking what I would do if something tragic like murder or rape happened to someone I love.
I absolutely can't imagine what this kid's family is going through.

Worst part is, as soon as you leave campus it's sketchy. Friend of mine lived on Emmitt, a block from campus, and there were people blitzed out of their mind on coke/meth/heroin EVERYWHERE at night. You couldn't walk to depot town without getting stopped by somebody on a tether looking for a ride somewhere. it's a shady place and that's a shame.
