How does this dog reflect our culture? Being a history teacher, you should know that the dog is linked to mesoamerica and not our region.

Have some fun sometime...

obviously you don't know the history of this fitbud, or that 95% of the city hates the name. The chihuahua has absolutely no connection to El Paso nor northern Mexico

What connection does the Tiger have to Detroit? For as "beloved" as the redskins name is in Washington, I live here, and there are virtually zero native americans or native traditions (part of the reason for the controversy IMO). Is Pittsburgh a known hub for Piracy?

Its a minor league baseball team that will probably be gone in ten years, because... its a minor league baseball team, and they come and go. Not because the name means anything or doesn't mean anything.

Nacotchtank is from DC... Anyways, the original poster incorrectly stated that it reflects our culture. First of all, we're not in Mexico and secondly, the dog's origin isn't even associated with Mexico, but rather Central America, which is a very long ways from El Paso.

To give history of this fitbud troll, I will link a thread... http://csnbbs.com/showthread.php?tid=635898

He has been anti-UTEP/El Paso from the first day he posted. He originally posted as fitbuddy and had a neg rep of about 50 and decided to change his name. He has stated that even if he is incorrect he will always post an anti-based opinion.

The Redskins went by that name when they moved to Washington from Boston in 1936.

FYI the American Kennel Club clearly states that the Chihuahua comes from Mexico.

Since I am a history teacher, I can tell you without a doubt that El Paso used to be part of Mexico.

That people who live in El Paso would not understand the connection is pathetic.

And another FYI

My original username was fitbuddy but I was no longer able to log into that name so I requested a change and it was granted. If I was doing it to avoid the negative rep, I wouldn't have canged it to Fitbud.

Secondly, my negative rep was because of one or two UTEP homers who take everything personally and have since personally attacked my family, my proffession, and me.

Lastly, my positive rep was given back after it was clearly proven that one person was responsible for negative reping me constantly.

Let's just say I have a stalker.

The team store is getting people downtown. They have nike merchandise. Not cheap stuff. All good things in my mind. I'll be going over tomorrow.

People are saying that the reason they went with the chihuahuas is because of Vega who is part owner and is originally from there. Well, if you got the money and you're part of the whole deal I guess you can name them whatever you want. The names growing on me or is it apathy?

I don't know if the initial shock of the name is wearing off, but I don't hate the name anymore, but I still don't like it. Contrary to what fitdumb post, the dog has almost no correlation to Mexico other than the name of a state in Mexico.

I'm not a huge fan of the name either. But, as was mentioned earlier, it's minor league baseball and kind of expected.

For anybody that grew up in El Paso, Diablos just feels right as the name of the baseball team. But, since that name is currently unavailable, I was in favor of the Sun Kings. Before they were the Diablos, the AA team in El Paso was named the Sun Kings. I think the best that can happen is that it's a stopgap, and when the Independent League Diablos move or fold, the AAA team will take the name.

I still think the name is idiotic. I don't think it will keep me from going to some games.

I do have to say, I decided against the season tickets. At least for me, excitement just isn't at the level it was before this announcement.

I hear the "think of it from the kids' perspective" argument. But.... I have kids ranging in age from 14-23, and my boys are not eager to see the Chihuahuas.

I would have been disappointed by a generic sun/desert (insert name). I like the chi who a who a's for a triple a team. Well done.

Our local minor league team is the Sugar Land Skeeters (as in Mosquito). It's also a bit of a racist name apparently but somehow that controversy has been downplayed and most people seem to love the name.

My mom keep cycling through Chihuahuas, so I dig the name.

Skeeters riled some folks up? I'll be damned. Maybe I should march around town with a sign demanding the Dynamo be named the 1836.Fuel To The Fire

Like the name or not the name and logo are a hot seller, not just in El Paso but nationally.

"Minor League Baseball indicated we're trending to be one of the highest teams if not the highest team ever after an unveiling through Internet sales," Chihuahuas General Manager Brad Taylor said. "We've already gotten orders from 34 different states, Mexico, Canada ... So this is not just here it's (all over) and we're very grateful for that."

I do not care for the name but if it results in better marketing it is a success. The name will have zero to do with the play on the field so high sales in merchandise is big right now as they grow the brand. At least people are still talking about them. I don't know if that'd be the case with some of the safer choices.

Had you already purchased your season tickets? I heard on the news that several people requested their money back when they heard about the name.

Frankly, I'm a little surprised at how angry people are by the name.

The only thing that will upset me is if they have a "bring your chihuahua to the game" promotion.

I had applied a portion of the payment. I'll still attend some games. But I'm just not in die-hard-fan mode to spend money on Chihuahuas, when my 14 & 24 yr-old boys don't seem excited anymore. I wanted to get season tickets to spend time with my kids. But if they don't want to go anymore....

Most MLB teams have the Bark-in-the-Park night, where folks bring their dogs. So be ready.

RE: OT: The El Paso Chihuahuas
I had always planned on attending two games a month (once a payday). Nothing has changed for me. If nothing else, I have to admit, I am even more excited about the ball club now. I love that MountainStar is not only sticking to their guns but addressing and interacting with the opposition. I have heard the President of MountainStar on Sports Talk, the KLAQ Morning Show, and a few news broadcasts. They took the hard calls and stayed the course.

I respect everyone's opinion. I would even respect fitbud's if ever actually posted his opinion. I am not trying to say anyone is wrong or tell anyone what to do or think. In my opinion only, it is silly that one's support would hinge on the name of the team. Chihuahuas wasn't my first choice and I would probably change it tomorrow if I could. Still, its AAA baseball in El Paso. That is all I need to know. I remember the days when Jim Paul tried to acquire a AAA franchise. I remember a few other groups that tried as well. I remember MountainStar striking out their first two times. We have AAA ball now though. I won't let a silly name ruin it for me.

Well Said. I agree with you 100%.

My opinion is that the city burned a lot of bridges by tearing down City Hall to give the team a stadium.

I'm over that now and I plan to support the team for as long as they stay in El Paso.
