Overall I-AA Playoff Status - 10/20/13
From an Overall Perspective...
Only 3 teams eliminated this week, but that number will start to go up quickly over the next couple of weeks as conference games are played. Sam Houston State losing makes the Southland wide open and lessens their chance of an At Large. Of course, the biggest story of the week was the drama around Grambling State – a team not usually mentioned on here since the SWAC doesn't usually participate in the playoffs. Will they play another D-I game? Do they drop to D2 or disband the whole program? Or can they turn this all around. It's an interesting story to watch and I can't wait to find out the answers.

From a JMU Perspective...
JMU had a Bye week this week, so hopefully the team is well-rested. The rest of the schedule is not very easy with 3 games against UNH, Villanova, and Towson still to come. We really need a win against at least one of those teams (along with wins over W&M and Stony Brook).

By the Numbers (107 total teams)...

Teams Alive for any Playoff spot:
10/13 – 104
10/20 – 101

Teams Alive for an At-Large spot:
10/13 – 82
10/20 – 74

Teams that have reached 7 wins (without clinching a conference):
10/13 – 1
10/20 – 4

Here's the overall playoff eligibility list. I am not listing transitioning teams (ODU, Incarnate Word, etc) to keep this more straightforward. The number in parenthesis after a team is how many more losses they can have before they can't reach 7 wins. Teams that are in RED cannot reach 7 wins and therefore must win their conference AQ. When a team reaches 7 wins, I will list them in GREEN. When a team clinches an AQ spot, I will list them in BLUE.

(NOTE – I had to make some adjustments to the numbers for some of the Big Sky teams. With this year's wide variation in the number of D-I games for each team, I had to come up with a slightly different method for figuring it out so I made some mistakes last week. Hopefully everything is accurate now.)

Conference Analysis

CAA – UNH's last minute win over Villanova has given sole possession of 1st place to their rival in Maine. Of course, we're not even close to crowning the Black Bears the champs of the CAA – five teams are within one game of Maine in the conference standings. Villanova – one of those 2nd place teams – will be hosting Maine next week. Maine is typically a much tougher team at home than on the road, so expect a good game. Aside from the Maine-Nova game, the other game to watch this coming week will be our JMU-W&M game. W&M lost to Maine this past week to give them 2 conference losses – one more and they will almost certainly be out of AQ contention. The other 2nd place teams (Towson, UNH, and Delaware) play the bottom of the conference. They all should be favored to win – so be on the lookout for upsets. Towson, meanwhile, recovered from last week's loss to Villanova by easily knocking off Albany – giving them 7 wins for the season. Oh, and Richmond lost to URI!

Big Sky – This week saw Montana knocking Cal Poly from the conference-unbeaten ranks, but we still have a massive logjam at the top with 7 teams having one conference loss or less. Next week will be a big week for the conference, though, as 6 of those top teams will be facing each other. (Sac State has a Bye). So next week, we'll have a much clearer picture of this conference.

Big South – The big game this weekend was Coastal Carolina knocking off Liberty in 2OT. That gave Coastal 7 wins and puts them closer to the AQ. It will be 3 weeks before Coastal starts to play the 2nd and 3rd place teams, but next week they can completely knock out VMI. Liberty's playoff chances obviously took a massive hit with this loss. Their schedule left very little margin for error (2 non-D-I games, a full I-A game, and a game with ODU), so with losses to Richmond and Coastal, they now cannot make it to 7 wins. So now they have to win the AQ – and Coastal has the 2-way tie-breaker.

Independent – Monmouth is the only independent team that is playoff-eligible, so they're the only one I will talk about here. They'll be in the Big South next year (replacing VMI), but this year they can only get an At-Large. With 4 losses already, they really need to win out to have a shot at the playoffs. It's possible, but not too likely. This week, they beat Cornell and will finish out the year with 4 games against their old NEC foes (after a Bye).

MEAC – Bethune-Cookman easily won their game against a bad Savannah State and SC State had a bye, so there's no change at the top. B-C and SC State will face each other next week, so watch that game to see who will move into an important AQ lead. The interesting part of this week's games were the number of teams moving closer to At Large elimination. Going into the week, there were four teams who had a one-game cushion to stay alive for the 7-win mark. All four of those teams lost. So now we have seven teams in the MEAC who must win out to get 7 wins. (Obviously, this is all academic – a 7-win MEAC team is NOT getting an At Large, but it's still fun to look at.)

MVC – What a frustrating season it must be for Northern Iowa! They start out with 4 straight wins – including knocking off Iowa State. But now they have lost 3 in a row in games that can't get much closer. They lose by one point at NDSU, then they lose to SIU in overtime, and this week they blow a 21-point lead over South Dakota at home to eventually lose in 2OT. So now, they are almost eliminated from the AQ and will need to start piling up some wins to stay in At Large contention. NDSU and Youngstown continued to win, with Youngstown now reaching 7 wins. We still have a month before they play each other, but it could be for the AQ. For this week, the game to watch will be Northern Iowa at SDSU. Both teams came into this past week ranked in the Top 15 on SN's poll (don't get me started on that), but one of them will likely be officially eliminated from the AQ one week from now.

NEC – Three of the 7 NEC teams had a Bye this week and there still haven't been too many conference games so far, so there aren't any major developments. None of the teams have official Byes over the next 4 weeks, so things will finally become interesting. Sacred Heart looks to be the strongest of the teams so far, but that loss to Wagner could really hurt them.

OVC – Eastern Illinois and Tennessee State each won their games easily this week to stay at the top of the OVC. Those two teams will play each other next week (at Tenn State). Whoever wins that game will not only take sole possession of 1st place, but also reach 7 wins in case they falter later on. The 3rd and 4th teams also won this week to stay within one game of the AQ.

Patriot – Fordham is now up to 8 wins with their victory over Yale. They're ineligible for the AQ, but they're looking more certain for an At Large. The favorite to win the AQ, Lehigh, easily took care of Georgetown in their 1st conference game. Still too early to see the full picture in the Patriot, but Lehigh would completely eliminate Bucknell with a win next week.

Pioneer – Teams are starting to be completely eliminated here since I can now guarantee that someone will reach 5 conference wins. Five eligible teams have one or zero losses and 4 of them will play each other next week. Butler is in sole possession of 1st place right now, but 3 of their 4 conference wins have come against the lower part of the conference. Three of their next 4 games should be a lot tougher.

SoCon – Not an exciting week for the SoCon. One third of the teams had Byes this week and there were no upsets in the three games that were played. Western Carolina was completely eliminated with their loss. Next week will see Samford at Wofford in a battle of 2 conference undefeateds.

Southland – I mentioned last week that Sam Houston State would get a test versus McNeese this week and I was right. McNeese led for most of the game and held on for the win. SHSt's defense gave up almost 500 yards which has to have them worried. SHSt does have 5 wins right now, but 3 of them are not very impressive (Houston Baptist, Incarnate Word, and Texas Southern). They still have some tough games coming up, so they could now be in trouble. McNeese and SE Louisiana are now both undefeated in the conference and will face each other in 2 weeks.

A bit OT, but why doesn't ND play in the MVC. Both conferences are tough. Seems there would be less travel involved. Does anyone have insight to this? Maybe its just their way of separating themselves from NDSU.

Originally, it was supposed to be both ND and SD going to the Big Sky (as they absorbed the Great West Conference).

Looking at an article from 2010 announcing SD going to the MVC, it says the MVC commish did not have the votes to make it an 11-team conference. When SD said that it did not have to go where ND went, they received an invite to make it 10 teams. I'm guessing that if it had been offered, ND would have joined the MVC as well. (They probably still would.)

Really panama? You came here to say THAT? So many other things you could stress, but let's make sure people don't think our embarrassment of a team is minor league...

Curious what is the reason Fordham cannot win the Patriot league AQ?

I believe it's because Fordham offers athletic scholarships in football, which is against the conferences rules, so they are not eligible for the AQ.

I believe it's because Fordham offers athletic scholarships in football, which is against the conferences rules, so they are not eligible for the AQ.

A minor correction only because I looked it up for another thread. The Patriot schools are allowed to offer scholarships now, but this is the first year competing with those athletes. Plus the league is limiting the number (only 15 per year up to a max of 60). Fordham started offering several years earlier so they have a jump on everyone else in the conference. Also I have not seen where Fordham has decided to adhere to the Patriot league imposed limitations.

Seriously...how could anyone confuse the fake GSU as an FCS team? With one win the two seasons, being one of 6 FBS teams without a win halfway through the season, and the third lowest Sagarin rating of any FBS team (only 2 CAA teams have a lower Sagarin rating) fake GSU is OBVIOUSLY an FBS team.

what part of this picture says FCS to anyone?

Look at how HUGE that stadium is. How nice the seats are. The scoreboard is MASSIVE. All those club seats and luxury boxes. No one in FCS has that.

GSU has got it all! I mean, what do you see in this picture that they don't have? FBS all the way !

Great job Saxkow.

I see you're going with the 7 win threshold. In a 12 game season, I don't see 7 wins making it in, esp with a lot of teams from other conferences playing a Div II. I'd use an 8 game threshold...

I doubt a 7-win team will make it this year also, but since the rules encourage only 7 wins, that's what I use. (I also doubt Pioneer, NEC, and some other conferences will get At Larges as well, but it ruins the fun if I eliminate them right know just because I don't think they're worthy.) When we get to the final week, then I start actually picking who I think will make it.

The Pioneer champion will have a rude welcoming to the playoffs, even if they are matched up with a MEAC team. Butler, the current leader, has two non-conf wins and they are both D-III schools.

I am confused - when did GaSt start a football program? I just thought they had guys show up with pads to collect a paycheck. It's a shame the automatic win went elsewhere - but at least Appy and Ga Southern won't have to worry about last place in the Sun Belt.
