Also, it'll put to end to the mean mugging that HAVOC is, played by VCU, and the slap fest that teams like Louisville employ.
I don't really think so. As long as refs can only call 1 foul on 1 possession, VCU's style is going to work fine. Same with Louisville.
You all complained about how much we mugged and grabbed, and we got called more than all but 40 or so teams in D1 basketball, we were in the 300's nationally in fouls per game. We did get called on a lot of them, the only thing is when everyone is physical and only 1 guy gets called, there is a perception that we're getting away with a lot. The truth is that we were called more than all but a few teams in college basketball. It can't really get much worse for VCU.
Our style of play is predicated on physicality, like Charlotte on steroids. Folks will most certainly complain, but VCU has the depth to play that way. We know we push the envelope but it works for us. Plenty of refs called fouls on everything in VCU games, and VCU adjusted and still won a lot of them because we're deep enough and feel that the benefits of playing that way outweigh the foul trouble. The same will happen now. As long as calls are subjective and refs vary, VCU will test the limits and take what the refs give them in the games that are called more loosely.
Who it will really hurt is the slow-it-down half court teams. Teams like SLU, UVA, Drexel, Wisconsin etc. that play football in the half court and body you are going to get murdered by these rules. Remember that the whole point of these rules are to promote pace and increase offense. Faster pace and increased offense plays right into VCU's hands. We were top 20 in the country in scoring last year. All those teams that tried to take charges, bump cutters, and grab in the half court to make high-octane offense slog it out are going to feel the brunt of these rules the most.
I think the whole 'pressing teams are getting shut down by these rules' is overstated and not really well-thought through.
