Syracuse - some unattractive SU Juniors strike up a conversation with my friend and I and abruptly within a minute goes "Are you Jewish?" I tell her no. She then goes on to tell me she herself is Jewish and how Jewish Syracuse is. She asks where I go. I said I went to Temple. She says "where is that?" I say Philadelphia (and in my head it follow it with "dumb***"; remember we are 4.5 hours from Philadelphia and Temple is the third biggest university in the NE US). She says I thought it was in New Orleans. I said nope, maybe you're thinking of Tulane. She says "Oh yeah. Well I wish you went to Tulane."

Walking to another bar on M Street, an Orange fan asks us if we enjoyed the game. When he asks, I tell him I went to Temple. He yells "Oh, I LOVE New Orleans". I smile and walk away.

You want more proof go to any VA Tech, Miami, Maryland or Pitt board. I doubt you would get one nice word from any of them. And if you would it would be "Thank God we aren't in a conference with them anymore".

Wtf, Temple is in Philly? I thought it was in New Orleans?.............kidding.

I will report on my experience at NCSU later in the season.... It may be bad since I will be sitting first or second row (depending on which seat i'm given) on the 50 yard line of the home side decked out in purple and gold. I'm known to get overly excited during games so we will see what the ole fogeys say. I've sat there before (twice) as a neutral fan and the guy next to me was actually an ECU alum/father of state grad and we had a grand time talking pirate football. Hopefully he is there again.

We did have a problem with one of them telling my friend from NY that if he was 20 years younger he would knock his block off. My friend has that "typical New York" mouth like a sailor, it's just second nature to him.

I cant say I've ever heard anyone think Temple was in New Orleans. The Cuse stuff is weird because there are a lot of Jews from the Philly area at Cuse (my graduating class had like 10 alone).

Being in a Jewish fraternity, I can tell you two things:
1. Tulane is known in the Jewish community for it's large Jewish population.
2. Jewish girls don't know crap about football, or any colleges other than their own and where their high school ex and/or some random guy they creep on Facebook and Twitter, (whom will most likely go to UCLA, NYU, Tulane, Indiana, or Maryland).

I'm Jewish and Tulane is very popular for students from Philly, so I'm well aware. Second point is pretty true,

UCF was the absolute worst place I've ever beem to see a game. Their fans cussed, heckled, and spit at my brother-in-law and myself on the walk through campus and their mall area. They even cussed a UCF graduate and his 4 year old son for walking with us. Mind you now, I was 30 years old at the time and stone cold sober.

These bad encounters at football games are, sadly, a microcosm of society today.

Surprised no one has mentioned the heathens at LSU. Absolutely the worst experience ever.

RE: Visiting Experience Gone Wild
Good thread. I've visited a lot of schools over the years and don't recall bad experiences at any of them. I do recall being in the Big Apple many years ago for the NIT and running into some Michigan fans who were about as obnoxious as any fans I've ever met, but I won't hold that against the entire fan base.

I was pleased to see so many posters say they'd had a good visit to Lafayette, LA for a Cajun game. The people there are very friendly and love to entertain out-of-towners.

I've been to several Bama games (both in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa) and both were very good experiences...classy fans. LSU fans can sometimes be dicks though. Just add alcohol and some become instant a$$holes.

Only negative at the ULL games I've attended is the students that sit next to the visiting fans. I have thin skin when it comes to boozed up "hoolagans" interrupting my game watching and just being bad fans. I think these types of disruptive fans at ULL are nothing but LSU wannabes.

Other than that, the tailgating was great and the people were friendly.

I've got a low tolerance too for boozed-up fans, or anyone else for that matter. Back when I was a student, alcohol was not allowed at the games though most of the students smuggled in a bottle. Some, of course, arrived too tanked to find their butts with both hands. And what's the point of going to the game if you're too drunk to even enjoy it?

Yeah, the tailgating is a lot fun. Hope our paths cross again, and good luck in C-USA.04-cheers

Morgantown is in a more rural part of the state, but that's not the only factor. wvu attracts a lot of students from the Northeast who were rejected from Rutgers, PSU, Pitt, etc. So they come from these larger cities to some small, hick town and just trash the place. They think they can just do anything: tip over cars, set fires, assault people. These are the Jersey Shore types. Probably 20% of the fan base on game day.

Then there are the non-alumni hillbillies. Never graduated from anywhere, many times not even high school. They treat Moganhole just like their "holler," where anything goes. Will fight at the drop of a hat, and love to do it. Are usually liquored up 4+ hours before kickoff. These people make up 50% of the fan base on game day.

Then you have the wvu alums. These people are actually humiliated by the actions of the guidos and hillbillies. Their first words to visiting fans are usually apologies, knowing how they've been treated until this point. 30% of the game day fan base, but many times go completely unnoticed due to groups 1 and 2.

Without question the worst fan base in America. Just an awful group of people. And their administration embraces it, even hiring coaches who act just like them.

Totally agree. There still are good people who are in the WVU fan base, but they are outnumbered by all the rednecks. If you are around the right people, the game can be enjoyable, but you have to go up the hill through thousands of drunk tailgaters. That's where all the problems start.

RE: Visiting Experience Gone Wild
I have been in nearly every stadium the Pirates have played from NY to Louisiana. For a decade WVU held my mantle as the "worst game day experience of my life." The "fans" lack of any class and human decency was beyond belief. I should have been tipped off when I parked my vehicle at the CHURCH selling parking spots. The attendant saw my ECU stickers and told me he couldn't guarantee the safety of my vehicle. I thought he was joking. It just went downhill from there. Simply walking to the stadium my wife and I were subjected to F-bombs and threats. I was trying to figure out what I had done to tick these people off. It was surreal. And by the way, after the game and walking another gauntlet of verbal harassment, I discovered my vehicle was indeed vandalized. Incidentally, I've had only two negative interactions with visiting fans at ECU home games, and both were WVU. One was a bunch of four knuckleheads behind me who decided they wanted to sit in someone else's seats. When the rightful ticket holders showed up, the WVU fans refused to move until security showed up. The other was some old WVU guy in the parking lot who was apparently angry with me because I was blocking him in traffic. Never mind that I was blocked in myself.

And then came South Florida. I never thought it could happen, but USF fans made WVU fans into instant class by comparison. The lack of any human decency whatsoever by USF fans reaches a depth I never thought possible by any fanbase, and that was from only ONE game. There are way too many examples to list, but some I personally experienced or witnessed include patiently waiting by a restaurant door for a table to open up when a USF fan previously seated gets up, walks across the room, approaches me and begins loudly insulting me and ECU. The USF fans who repeatedly ventured into the ECU sections at the bowl game, harassing ECU fans and trying to instigate fights. Perhaps the lowest, most classless fanbase act I've ever witnessed involved USF fans when an ECU mom with two young kids walked by them outside the stadium. They started yelling at the young children, who looked to be about seven and nine, asking them if they knew their mommy was a whore.

Because I would like to end this post on a positive note.
My best away game experience was Southern Miss. Their fans were the most welcoming, friendliest, classy bunch I've experienced anywhere, and that was even following one of our wins there. Several approached my wife and I after the game, thanked us for attending, and congratulated us on our team. THAT is sportsmanship and what the game day experience is supposed to be.

Yea I agree about South Florida, when I was in band we played at halftime and before entering the field, their fans and students were literally throwing rocks at us....was nice to get a win there for sure though!

No, it's really not just us that think they're the *** stains on the crotch of life. Ask Pitt and VT fans especially, and you'll find much the same sentiment that you find in Herd Nation.

And its not like they're dicks to their regional rivals or even in conference teams. When LSU played in Morgantown a couple of years back, not only did they make shirts that contained some rather tasteless comments about natural disasters and FEMA, but there was a couple from LSU that were assaulted by a group of mountaingoats -- the lady was 7 months pregnant. After knocking her down, they beat the snot out of her husband and actually put him in the hospital for a couple of days.
The Big XII fans are even already disenchanted with them -- and it's only their second season in the conference!

These degenerates are a bunch of classless animals and the saddest part is, there's nobody from within saying "This is wrong, stop doing that." The University and Athletics issue their statements re: fan behavior, etc. but NEVER follow up on them. Then to make it worse, they hire coaches who are just as much of degenerates as their fanbase. I honestly believe the governor of West Virginia could make a proclamation condemning the actions of the mountaingoat fanbase, and nobody would give 2 ***** of two buck chuck and continue on business as usual -- and then the governor would be called out for taking a stand against the behavior of fans at the state's flagship institution. Especially our current governor since he and his wife are both Marshall grads.

I honestly don't know what it's going to take to get the folks up there to realize that they are a disgrace to our state and are casting West Virginia as a whole, not just their piddly ass cow college, in a bad light to the rest of the country.

I say they're just pricks.

"People from Jersey" don't have a thick southern coalfields accents and sound like they're straight from the hollers of Boone/Logan/McDowell/Mingo County.

Note: Not calling these specific counties out as the problem since Marshall pulls almost equally from these counties, just giving the general area where the dialect is from.
