Still though I agree that the idea is kind nuts, the quote from the buggy driver is right on:

The only reason we exploit Asian labor is because nobody wants to pay for a 60 inch flat screen that would cost twice as much if it were built here.

And if we're stupid enough to spend a $150 on the latest Nike shoe which probably cost twenty bucks to make in SE Asia, then we have chosen to victimize these emerging economies as much as the corporate giants who do business there.

It's not just cheap labor either. Every time a new company comes into a community the city fathers begin salivating thinking of the ways they can extort taxes from them. Never seems to occur to them that the employees will earn more, pay more taxes, spend more which in turn means additional employees on the consumer side.

Hong Kong is nothing more than unregulated commerce. Want to bring Detroit back? Mirror Hong Kong.

That's a misnomer, cost doesn't drive price when the two are so decoupled. What you'll pay drives the price, it's about the margin, not "you paying more".

Simple.

Chip, what community extorts taxes from new industry? Usually they are falling all over themselves to give property tax breaks. Which hurts your schools tax base, by the way.

Electronics are produced with very little human labor, its all robots, humans simply aren't precise enough.
