RE: South Alabama game
I have not been too disappointed in the offensive play calling until the BSU end game. You can not broadcast the play that you are running 3 straight times from the one yard line against anyone. The thing that makes a play work is execution and deception. The thing that stops a play is defensive execution and guessing correctly. When you do not have to guess on defense, stopping the offense is easy, especially in tight quarters. That was a critical time for us and I assume that Haynes made those calls because he said he would do the same thing all over again. I lost respect when I heard that. I think Rock is a good OC.

Our defense is another matter. I am not happy with anything we are doing there. Changes must be made.

I disagree. I am not sure our defensive issues are coaching- related alone. You can only do so much to cover weak LB play. They (the players) are playing hard, but our LB play without Mixon is much worse than last year and as a result, EVERYTHING looks worse.

Agree about LB play. Overall talent on D is sparse.

In theory it sounds great but we can't recruit the same kind of athletes that OSU does. That position is geared towards highlighting a fast athletic ball hawk which we don't really have on our defense.

I think the decision to play a base-nickel defense(the "star" is just a nickel back) has more to do with great depth at safety and little to no depth at LB.

The "star" is not intended to be "just a nickel back". With our personnel that's what it amounts to. That's why I think it's a problem. At Ohio St his options at that position were bigger, faster, and more versatile. So they could be counted on being a factor in the run game and the pass game. Here, instead of having a creative base defense with the "Star" being a wildcard that must be accounted for, our base defense is a nickel. Much less creative. I've never liked coaches that can't adjust their style to fit the personnel they have.

This isn't intended to be a shot at Italiano. I've actually thought he's been a pretty nice surprise so far. Likely our replacement for Luke Wollet next year.

Mixon left 2 years ago, do you mean Malauulu or Batton?
