RE: lethargy?
and... You could watch it from your couch on TV. When the only options were to go to the game or listen to Schickman on the radio it was different.

We can't pretend that the game being televised had no impact on a rainy afternoon in October.

That was me. Never said anything crazy. Worst thing was, "I hate Richmond." Had the pleasure of an encounter with a state trooper telling me to "keep calm" & tried to give me the third degree about potentially having alcohol in my pocket. Deflected him eventually, but it was a huge drag. I left the section for the second quarter.

Hyper, didn't know that was you. That was my buddy (beard and yellow hat) who came up to you backing you up and later said something to the cop. We didn't hear you curse or do anything wrong. Thought the whole situation was total crap.

Thought the young cop was HPD?

I'm the big guy who was with my friend who spoke to you. You know the "please don't hit or bang on the ceiling" signs on the overhang above the top row. That's mainly because of us- the incompetent Schikman can't deal with any noise.

Maybe it was Schikman who complained.

I'm getting sick and tired of this don't make any noise mentality near the top...

Yeah, definitely a young guy. Your buddy was very nice & I appreciated him sticking up for me a little. I can't say 100% that it was a state trooper, but I thought it was at the time.

And it was total crap. I think I might have said "kill the ticks" before he spoke to me. Everything else was "I hate Richmond". His only real comments to me were that I needed to "stay calm" as if there were rules or laws against cheering loudly at a football game.

Looking back, it seems obvious he was trying to provoke me into doing something to kick me out. He kept asking me if I had alcohol in my pockets & would repeat the question after I answered "no". He got flustered & told me not to touch him as I patted his arm once. I'm not a disrespectful guy to the police, but it was pretty frustrating to get spoken to like a criminal for yelling innocuous things at a football game.

JMad03 might have insight into what happened as he sits behind us. I really don't know what sparked the whole ordeal; if he actually had a complaint or decided to take turn it into a "situation" on his own.

If you get a chance BDK, let me know how your friend's conversation with the officer went.

So we have another fan asked to not cheer situation like D-Nuts encountered during a basketball game? Great.

I don't have a dog in this fight but I'd email this, the over anxious cop part of this thread to Bourne and ask for a response...Respect Alum even though you've already gotten our student activity fees.

My only hangup to doing that is I feel I'll be made a target by athletics officials. The officer was very focused on my BAC without coming out & saying that. He repeatedly asked me how much alcohol I had on me.

I can understand wanting to keep a handle on the drunkies, but I was being loud out of hatred for Richmond, not because I was hammered.

RE: lethargy?
One of my good friends who was standing right next to me was pulled out of the stands by 3 police officers. They talked to him for about 10 minutes and then he came back up. He told us that they said "we were watching you son, we know you've been drinking. Where's the alcohol?" My friend, who is 19, said that he hadn't (and he really hadn't been) and the cop wouldn't buy it. So my friend pulls out his JAC card and gives it to the cop and after a few minutes of talking, he comes back up into the stands. This was only the beginning though.

Later in the game, one of those 3 cops was standing by the fence right behind the Richmond bench where the defense would huddle up. After we scored on them, a bunch of us were cheering and one of the players looks at us and we yelled stuff like "great play 24!" One of the players, it was either 24 or 37, flips us off. So of course we all go ballistic. The police officer then smiles, looks me in the eyes and mouths "keep it up and you're out of here." I asked him if he did not just see the Richmond player flip us off and he shook his head and mouthed the same thing.

No one was cursing or using any slurs. It was just cheering and we were being very loud and probably pretty obnoxious to the Richmond players. But there is no rule against that. I have no idea where these cops feel the need to try and control a completely nonexistent situation. Also, this is the same cop who looked on as #15 for Richmond ran to the fence right in front of us after his big kick return and yelled "Fight me faggots" repeatedly. I look over and the cops are standing a few feet to the left, not watching the player yell slurs across the fence into the stands, but watching us to see if any of us yell anything back. It was ridiculous.

Maybe we need a Respect Football Fans campaign on campus? All of you guys that call out the students, me included, I think we are getting a peak at a real problem, the JMU fun police are out in full force at tailgates and in the stadium.

Let's pray to any and all gods that JMU's athletic officials prioritize things to do before target fans for cheering, like get us the hell out of then CAA...now that I think about it you may have a point.

Yeah I've had plenty of cops and ushers threaten to throw me out lots of places for nothing but cheering loud and heckling the other team. Some people just love to throw their weight around, probably go in to the day hoping to get to throw someone out. It does seem worse at JMU than anywhere though.

For the most part, if you continually try to talk to a specific player, they're going to target you & try to remove you. That's just how that goes. Not saying you did anything wrong, just saying that's how it's been for a while now.

Awesome we've got such awesome sleuth police in the stadium who JUST KNOW when someone's been drinking because they're excited & shouting. Good stuff.

That's crazy. You're at a football game, not a dance recital. As long as you're not screaming F bombs you should have told them a couple things about how they got to that position in life because that's what football is about. It's the time to get out and act like a nut.

I agree. Just not worth the fight with a cop seemingly bent on getting me out of the stadium. I knew anything I said or did that would get him riled up would be taken as "contempt of cop" & the truth wouldn't find its way into the report. Before yesterday, I did think they had mostly gotten the stadium yelling nazis under control. Oh well...

The worst part is they think they're cops. We have people who are trying to be passionate and make noise and are getting **** from rent-a-cops? That's not a way to draw people to the stadium. So what if you had a few? Like I said before, if you weren't just dropping F bombs all over the place they should have left you alone. I know the admin reads this board. Do you want more people dressed up in purple seats? There was nobody there yesterday and you want to alienate the people who are hard core? Good luck with that strategy. Get a handle on the people in yellow.

This actually was a police officer, but I get what you're saying about the folks in yellow. Haven't had issues with ours since that first game after the stadium opened, but I know that's not the case everywhere.

Yeah the people in yellow have always been awesome to us in the stands. Shoot we had the lady laughing at our jokes we made during the Albany game right 2014?

RE: lethargy?
Getting targeted by the cops at games really does get old quickly. For a number of years (yes, years!), there was a cop planted in front of me at just about every game looking for a reason to come have a chat. Even the game that Devil got the end zone couch, we had a cop not-so-subtly positioned about 10 feet from us. Contrary to the beliefs of certain members of the administration, I really didn't do anything other than be loud and try to get people up around me. (Argue away about the peanut cheer, but I still think that's fairly tame compared to a lot of things out there.) It wasn't until last year that I could finally go to a game without a cop standing right in front of me. JMU really does know how to kill a fan base, though.

I think I have missed something here. Why were you "targeted" by cops at games? Are you sure it isn't coincidence that they are stationed in the area where you sit?

Unbelievable that fans of the home team in their own stadium are being hassled for cheering for their team. I would not be surprised if fans of the visiting get hassled, but not the home fans! Keep cheering Hyper, you are tight!
