WIC and the shutdown
The NC DHHS has had more than it's share of problems over the years, regardless of the party in power. Currently they are in the middle of a number of scandals/controversies. They aren't helping themselves by cutting out payments for WIC recipients. Every state but NC has continued the program despite the shutdown.

WIC is the way food stamps should be in that only certain, and known, items are allowed to be purchased.

You can't just buy anything with food stamps (at least if the state is running it the way they're supposed to)

Now we're at the "OMG BABIES ARE STARVING" moment. If only Senate Dems and Obama would put country above party this wouldn't happen. So sad.

Positive Rep me and I'll vote for Obama in 2016 now Free

As of this morning...WIC is up and running in NC. My wife is a Health Director and got the notice last night.

You can buy a ton more "stuff" with food stamps than on WIC. Unless the program has changed, the WIC user had a card with specific items, like milk, eggs, juice (not all types of juices), etc. More healthy items meant for women, infants, and children, as the name of the program implies. No candy bars, junk food, etc was allowed.

Agreed. Not a single person on food stamps should ever be able to eat better than someone not on food stamps.

They should be limited to healthy choices...period. If they are on this program they are also on Medicaid. The healthier they eat...the less their medical costs will be on the public dole.

RE: WIC and the shutdown
Instead of food stamps, they should have to go to a warehouse once per week and pick up a ration of "free", lower quality government food that they can survive on. I don't even care if it is healthy as long as it doesn't taste good, but can be survived on. They need to be motivated to get off the program. Free money won't do that.

Even Adam and Eve had to make effort and pick their own fruit.

But modern man finds such effort for simple necessities most unbenevolent.

No, but they can buy a lot of stuff people shouldn't be allowed to buy. Shouldn't be able to buy junk food with FS. It should be limited to fruits, vegetables, juice, eggs, fresh meat, milk, and maybe a handful of other items.

Soda, Kool-Aid, cookies, chips, processed frozen meals, etc shouldn't be allowed in my opinion.
