Some, like the AFL- placed every team in a merger. Some like the AAFC, WHA and the ABA placed a few with the more established league. Some, like the USFL, the WFL and the Federal League placed none.
Always liked the Houston Gamblers and Pittsburgh Maulers.
The WHA Miami Screaming Eagles- which never played a game I believe.
The Hawaiians from the WFL.
Memphis Southmen (from the Toronto Northmen).
The LA Dons of the AAFC.
Virtually all the Federal League team names were awesome:
Baltimore Terrapins
Brooklyn Tip Tops
Newark Peppers
ABA-
The Spirit of St. Louis
Dallas Chaparrals
Kentucky Colonels
Virginia Squires
SD Conquistadors
Just awesome stuff
Don't forget Rogues. Great name and great theme song too. Not so great mascot.

When we get into minor leagues and non Big 4 leagues the nicknames get even better- yes, Rogues was great.
Colleges are great too- think about it. Something like Cornhuskers is simply accepted.

I won't forget them. They were our first truly major league franchise, if you call the NASL and soccer a major sport. I saw our first victory in the LB against Dallas, followed up by that epic 1-0 win against the vaunted NY Cosmos. Below attachment holds some great memories for me at least.

I hadn't thought of those names though out that blog in decades, yet all brought back memories. If someone had point-black asked me to name as many Rogues as I could, I think that only Smilie, Houska, Field, and Faulkner (and of course, McCreadie) would have immediately come to mind. I would have had to think a long time to come up with many more than that.
Hayden Fry and Tim Rose were icons on the sideline with shades when the sun was out. McCreadie didn't require the sun to wear them; he maintained his cool look even in overcast weather some days.

A few memories of the Rogues:
Mirandinhia scoring a goal from midfield opening the second half (at Detroit?).
The strike game where the coach actually played along with mostly fill in players.
Playing Crystal Palace and a player broke his leg (heard the snap from the stands).
Rally Round the Rogues pep rally at Overton Square
Quarter beers
Live music with Edwin Hubbard, Righteous Bros. etc.
They had good promos-like turning in King Cotton hot dog wrappers in exchange for a cool NASL soccer ball. Wish I still had it.
Final game when Tony Field headed the final goal in against Houston.

Memories of Pros, Tams, Sounds.....
Warren Davis (the Geezer?)
Les "Big Game" Hunter
Coby Detrick (sp?)
Wendell Ladner
Johnny Neuman
Charlie Edge
Sweet Charlie Williams
Gerald Govan
George Leyman (sp)....3 pt shooter
Steve(?) Cannon.....3 point shooter
Stu Johnson "2 for Stu"
Wilbert Jones (possibly the best defensive player in the league)
Randy Denton
Bobby Warren
Warren Davis
Given time or a better memory, I'm sure I could come up with more.
Was Freddie Lewis on the roster for the last season?...as was one of the Pacers' mainstays for his last year, I can't recall his name
Who was the player that was cut late one night and the equipment manager made him return his shoes, which he had on, and he had to walk to his car in 20 degree weather in his sock feet?
Trading Mike Butler to Utah as the team moved from N.O. to Memphis....what were they thinking?
Lots of memories of 2K-3K crowds and a few of that silly looking green and gold "Tam" that Adolph Rupp/Charlie Finley thought was a good idea.
Finally, the team that Mike Storen put together was a fun team to watch with a good mix of old ABA veterans and younger players.
I don't recall seeing anything about this, but I guess that Hanna Storm lived here while Mike was owner.
I grew up near the Jones family that produced Wilbert, Caldwell (of 76ers fame) and Major (Rocket) and other brothers. Actually played one high school game against Caldwell and Major, and a ton of pick up games with Major.
That was a great 30 for 30 about the ABA.

Didn't all of those brothers go to Albany State?
I seem to remember a "Charles Jones" that also had some relation to the 3 brothers, but my memory could be off on that one.
