Best play-by-play radio announcer in college sports?
I thought this was a topic some would enjoy since I have read certain things, both good and bad, regarding our PBP guy.

This guy calls him the best PBP radio announcer in college sports.

RE: Best play-by-play radio announcer in college sports?
Jeff Charles is up there. He's been here 25 years.

"Charles, who received the 2000 North Carolina Sportscaster-of-the-Year Award, handled play-by-play duties for Virginia Tech, Illinois, and Furman prior to becoming the "Voice of the Pirates". He also served as sports director at WSB in Atlanta where he was the night-time host of a sports talk show heard throughout 38 states and Canada on the 50,000-watt clear channel station."

We've been pretty spoiled.

USM fans are probably the ones who will not suggest their announcer.

I've listened to Tulane's guy call baseball games. He's good and I like emotion in announcers, but he can be a bit histrionic for my liking. It seems like the guy needs to be put on suicide watch when Tulane is losing. Still, he's very knowledgeable and does his homework.

Jack Cristil (Mississippi State) was the best I've heard but he retired. His sense of humor--especially when State was losing--added so much. When State lost to Ole Miss something like 45-0 a few years back, he was reeling off classic one-liners (http://www.secrant.com/rant/p/11039377/J...-Bowl.aspx).

The best one was during the post-game show, "And today's "Sonic Drive of the Game": My drive back to Tupelo."

Now, I'd probably go with another old-timer: Eli Gold (Bama). I'm in my 20's but even I have to admit, none of the newer announcers can hold a candle to that generation.

If we are talking about TV: Tons of people will disagree because he's the old guy who isn't as sharp as he used to be, but it is still Musberger, to me. I'd maybe say Gus Johnson if I heard him call more college games recently. March Madness is not the same without him.

Below are 2 highlight clips - North Texas this past weekend and Army a few years ago. Listen to Todd's call of the Army game at the very end when they miss the FG - classic. Also, adding the LA Tech and ULM highlights.

Tulane vs. North Texas

Tulane vs. Army - Wide Right

Tulane vs. ULM

Tulane vs. La Tech

I like our own Jeff Charles but haven't really listened to others.

I like Chuck Keaton(sp?) for the Hurricanes.... does an entire pro hockey game by himself!

Our Panther's announcers are ok...not bad but not GREAT.

I like Chuck Kaiton, but when he gets excited I can't make out what he's saying.

Jeff Charles is my favorite.

I like the sound of the UCF guy when watching highlights, don't know his name though.

Bill Rosinski (former Panthers PBP Guy) is really good. he is currently doing NFL games for Westwood One I think and does random college games. His son Bobby is our sideline reporter for football as well.

I like Mike Keith (hope I have his name right), the guy that does Titans Football games. Far as college goes, I haven't heard anyone outside of David Crane in years, also, I hate that he works for alabama, but I have the highest regard for Eli Gold. And David Crane has been an excellent voice of the UAB Blazers, but the guy that passed the torch on to Crane, Gary Sanders? Aw, man, he was so much fun to listen to on the radio.

Yes its Mike Keith, he is very good and has been with the Titans since their inception in Nashville I think....

Nicest announcer I've ever met in person (that wasn't ECU related) was David Diaz-Infante. He does color commentary for ESPN. It was at a bar in downtown Winston-Salem after a FSU @ WFU football game a few years ago. Most down to earth guy ever. He showed off his Super Bowl ring he won with Elway & the Broncos. He is such a badass, he took a knee at our table on the concrete patio outside.

It's amazing that a guy from Brooklyn would move to the deep south and become one of the area's favorite announcers and probably the most recognizable voice in NASCAR...or at least right up there with Ned Jarrett.

I agree that Eli is one of, if not the best.

Look at the guys resume. He is really good at what he does. We are fortunate to have him and to have kept him. He was one of the finalist for the Carolina Panthers job at one point.
