RE: Best play-by-play radio announcer in college sports?
I think it is was you get accustomed to hearing so naturally there will be some bias towards your own schools "Voice". Honestly, the only guys I have heard outside of Jeff Charles at ECU is Woody Durham at UNC (He is now retired but I must admit when I was a kid I enjoyed listening to him) and Willey Ausley from back in the day at NC State. When I was growing up most of the weeknight college basketball games were not on TV so I would always listen to the UNC and NC Sate games on the radio and there were some great seasons to follow with the UNC 1982 and NC State 1983 NCAA Championships.

Dave Nitz

The veteran of state broadcasters and a 2011 inductee into the LA Tech Athletics Hall of Fame, is in its 38th season as the "Voice of the Bulldogs."

Since arriving in Ruston in 1974, Nitz has called football men's basketball, women's basketball and baseball and was recognized on December 22, 2009 for his 2000th Louisiana Tech broadcast.

The West Virginia native has been in the broadcasting business for more than 50 years, spending the past three and a half decades at LA Tech. During his time in Ruston, he also served as the assistant media relations director for the athletics department for 15 years.

He was named the 2009 Louisiana Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. He was also inducted into the Louisiana Tech Athletics Hall of Fame in October of 2011.

In addition to providing the play-by-play for the franchise, Nitz serves as the radio broadcaster and the media relations director for the Sioux City Explorers, an independent minor league baseball team in the American Association.

During his career, Nitz has also served as the play-by-play man for a number of minor league teams, including teams in the Orioles, Giants and Rangers organizations.

His 38 years at LA Tech ranks in the top five in the country among active broadcasters with the same school.

That would be Jeff Charles, talk all the crap you want, but he call the CIT title game while fighting cancer.

Jeff was at VT before coming to ECU, where he has made his home. He hosts a morning on Pirate Radio 1250 and a Wensday night show "From the Booth"

Here the link for Jeff's interview of Frank Beamer before this year's game

He interviews the play-by-play guy for each team and the HC.

Yeah, Jeff Charles is up there. Maybe not the best, but among them for sure.

I may take a shot at running one of the audio clips on the air on Friday, this topic is a bit of a "hot button" with many of our fans.

RE: Best play-by-play radio announcer in college sports?
Until he recently retired (after almost SIXTY years!), Jack Cristil of Mississippi State was my favorite of the announcers of specific schools. I thought he was really great at being fair to the other school. I think he is a WW2 vet who was there from 1953 through 2011.

I'd say that Jeff Charles is my favorite now. Like Cristil, he is very fair to the other school. And very detailed. We get the Ruff show here and I watched the UNC highlights (they filmed the show from UNC's field ... how cool is that) and was glad to see he looks well. Hopefully he has beaten cancer?

Regarding national announcers, I admit that Gus Johnson's enthusiasm is contagious to me. And the opposite of what I think it is put-on by Dickie V.

Unfortunately for Memphis, our Jack Eaton (27 years) was out in 1987 with a change in radio stations. Our current guy (Dave Woloshin), is, ahem, not so popular with most of us (college football has a 55-yd line during one broadcast).

I remember him, he was great.

According to wikipedia, he was born in December 1925. So he was 16 when Pearl Harbor was attacked and 19 when Japan surrendered (and 85 when he retired!). It's possible he saw action in WWII but I think most people his age probably did not. The wikipedia article doesn't say anything about it.

Okay, my bad, I think I may have made the connection now, have to admit, until I ventured over to this thread, I had no idea who he was/is.

Kick me! 03-lmfao

Is this the same Gus Johnson that some poor 15 year old kid in Ohio is in hot water about for using a term most commonly framed by Mr. Johnson? I just the article online a few minutes ago....I'll see if I can find the link and share it here.

Just tested it out myself and nothing. Best to go to yahoo's main site, you'll run into, I'm pretty sure. Sorry my attempt to share the link failed.
