It isn't how good you are, it's how many fans you have showing up. If NIU averages 30k+, then they'd be on the radar for a BCS conference, IMO.

But I think joining CUSA or AAC would be the first step to move on up. There are good teams in the Mountain West, in the B12's neck of the woods, who they'd be eyeing anyway.

SMU is in the American(Defunct Big East)

They were invited in 2013, because the American was about to fold, so they added conference USA teams(memphis, SMu, etc)..

C USA is overloaded

AAC > CUSA, CUSA is no better than the MAC. I would like to see MAC dump a few teams and add the better teams from Sun Belt. I think the AAC would help NIU in recruiting with more games played in the south.

I really think EMU adds no value to the MAC. Some will argue they do well in other sports outside of basketball and football, but frankly that will not bring the conference recognition or money.

Be careful, the 3 EMU fans that post on the MAC board will be very upset with you for picking on them.

They would all be very happy rooting for a winning team in the FCS.

Escorts usually don't happen til you're closer to the stadium I'm fairly certain. They take you the last 10 mins or so.

The only team buses that I saw with a full police escort and rolling roadblock was ARMY on the tollway and coming into DeKalb two years ago. They did have have several 3 star generals and one four star general along for a bus ride.

Yep, I was stuck behind it for quite a while.

We would have to
A) Turn Huskie Stadium into a Horseshoe.
B) Add even more seats onto Huskie Stadium in the east side towards the top.
C) Raise academic standards
D) Improve the Convocation Center

Now I'm not saying that were going to the BIG 12, I'm positive we are not. Im just saying what I heard, its soooo unlikely if we would in the next 5 years, but I think that eventually we would, I mean we are in a perfect location for it, being right by chicago, plus if we were to be added, that would mean that that Fox Sports Midwest would be able to come to the area.

What do you guys think? What would we have to do to get serious consideration for a big conference?

I'll tell you why this is a falisy, the big 12 telling us to raise academic standards,Pleeeeez

That way he and Dr. Baker can prioritize projects that close the gap and allocate funds toward those projects. It would give them a framework for everything they do going forward. That would seem the logical way to do it.

I have said this before, NIU would have to come up with millions to just get their ath budget to the mid point of the present big 12 buggets. You cannot compete with a budget of $19 mill. Ain't gonna happen

Was surprised that we're closer than we thought after seeing the Iowa State budget: $61mm less $22mm back from B12 equals an effective $39mm. Ours is ~ $20mm, so we would have to about double.

And that's just the annual budget, I'm sure the stadium improvement requirements et al would be huge.

You guys miss the fact that most of the Revenue ISU gets is generated from - TV contracts FB abd BB, BCS, NCAA tourney, and filling theri stadiums with OSU, OU, and Texas fans. The gap is big, but not as big as everybody likes to portray.

RE: NIU TO BIG 12
The B12 just distributed $22MM to each school via its media rights deals and it's expected to soon reach $30MM. Add that to NIU's current $20MM budget and you're not too far behind Iowa State ($55MM). It's fair to say ticket revenue and licensing $$$ would lift that too. NIU would be at the bottom of the conference but it wouldn't bring its MAC budget with them. It would certainly make it very difficult to compete for championships but Iowa State makes a decent enough go at it.

I'd be surprised if academics were a sticking point. In terms of research, NIU is a member of the Universities Research Association, which only 4/10 of the B12 (IA State, Oklahoma, TT, UT) can say. NIU is classified by Carnegie as having high research activity, same as Baylor, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, TT and West Virginia. In the US News rankings, NIU is #177 nationally, not far behind TT (161) and WVU (170).

Oops, looks like Iowa State's new budget is $60MM for the 2014 fiscal year, up from $55MM in 2013:

That's all that's necessary today.

What does Rutgers bring to the B1G? The New York market.
What does Maryland bring to the B1G? The Washington D.C. and Baltimore markets.

What else do they bring besides that? Nothing.

how are their other sport programs and academics and do they have a match w/ Big 10? i just think that we oversimplify this, thinking because our football team is good that its fit. There are so many other aspects to this IMO that matter in addition to the football program.

I know NIU is not right now a true Chicago market, just a pseudo one. But if NIU ever did go to a bigger conference it would most certainly arouse all the alumni in the Chicagoland market and turn NIU into a Chicago market.
