RE: Dayton vs Big East
The thing is timing of when the decision would happen. SLU has a very good shot of making the tourney this year for 3rd straight year. Dayton doesn't. Timing for Dayton is not good right now at all.

It's like leaving an All-Star Game because you're a Padre fan, and Johnny Grubb has already been used in the 3rd inning, and you don't feel like sticking around and watching Bench, Rose, Yaz, Reggie, Brett, Palmer and Seaver (not to mention the young Fidrych types). And that's what the Big East tournament is like... if PC is eliminated in the quarters, why would I walk out on semi-finals that might match McDermott vs Sampson, which might be followed with Davante Gardner vs Semaj, Georgetown vs Villanova, etc...? JTiii, Wright, Buzz, Lavin, etc...

I go back to 1980... the first BET was in Providence... PC lost the first game in the quarters on the first afternoon. We couldn't wait to return for the evening games and the semis the next day to see Sleepy Floyd, Louie and Bouie, Corny Thompson, Dan Calandrillo, plus the coaches in addition to those players-- all under the same roof within 48 hours..! We have the same dynamic today in 2013 with both coaches and players in the Big East.

Anyway, I can't imagine that we will have attendance problems in MSG... not to mention, local fans of former Big East teams (SU and ND in particular) will want to continue their annual pilgrimages to MSG to meet with friends.

Billy Jack, you and I are college basketball fans. When the Big East tournament was played in Hartford in those same early years, I took the afternoon off from work and went to the tournament, enjoying all 4 games both afternoon and evening. Couldn't get enough of it. Went to the entire tournament.

Some people don't understand why a UConn guy like me is so passionate about the Big East now that UConn is no longer in it. Simply put, I just love high quality college basketball - especially Eastern college basketball. I appreciate the game and don't have to have a team to root for or against.

I guess there are folks who go to the games to support their team. My wife always has to have someone to have a rooting interest to enjoy a game. I guess that's why there are fans who will pack up and go home if their team gets knocked out of the tourney early. I've gotten some great buys on tickets on the sidewalks outside the Garden from people like that.

Reminds me of fans I heard about who left Fenway last Sunday in the 8th inning before the Sox came to bat in the bottom half. They heard the call on Papi's grand slam in their cars and probably saw the Sox score the winning run in the bottom of the 9th at home. Crazy.

Some of the most memorable games occur if you just wait around for them. How about the 6 OT game between UConn and syracuse a few years ago? What college basketball fan wouldn't have paid admission to see that one?

i remember i was doing something else and flipped on the UConn/Syracuse game like 1st OT. It was just incredible... Reminds me a lot of the Notre Dame/Louisville game last year that went what 5OT?

Actually College Sports Madness is projecting Dayton as a tournament team this year. So, they have a shot.

We'll also have a better idea this year about how well Crews can coach, now that the team is a year removed from Majerus. St Louis is losing 2 of their top 3 scorers and rebounders, 3 of their top 7 players overall. They were deep last year, so they should be able to replace that production. But Crews did not recruit very well coming of the big year they had last season. That's not a good sign. At a minimum they won't be as deep as they were last year. Should they fail to live up to expectations, it will hurt them a lot.

Dayton and St Louis compete head to head in the A10, so things will be settled there. It's not great timing for Dayton for sure. But the Big East said it is giving itself up to 5 years to make expansion decisions. They could move quickly if St Louis and VCU solidify their positions this year. But if either of them falters, they could wait for things to sort themselves out.

Thing now is if VCU lives up to their 15 rank, makes the sweet 16, might force the issue for the Big East. If SLU has had a good year, better than Dayton, they probably get in as they won't have the detractors that Dayton has in Butler and Xavier.

Also, I could easily see schools like Butler and Xavier not supporting Dayton quite frankly ever.

I disagree that expansion likely happens within the next year. I believe that the "D4" football discussions happen first. Those start maybe in January (anything now is just for feeling out). After those are finalized, I think the BE will enter a waiting period to see what changes, if any, the football conferences go through and what impact the new rules/new division will have on the BE. Once those have settled down, expansion becomes a topic. I don't see Fox forcing the issue for more games with the whole "D4" thing hanging over college athletics. Meanwhile, the round-robin format plays on.

I think you will find the decisions done pretty quickly for D4. I mean, they'll want it starting as soon as possible to coincide with the new playoff...

But let's be realistic about the time table. Even if they decide on D4 by next spring, the implementation happens when? Immediately? Fall 2015? The fall-out in other conferences, if any, starts fall of 2014 at the earliest and ends when? December 2015? Later? BE knows landscape and fallout by then, so BE expansion discussions, if any, can begin. I just do not expect any expansion decisions for the BE between now and October 2014 (within the next year).

RE: Dayton vs Big East
I think if they decide by spring d4 you would see it implemented in July. I think Big East would know pretty quickly what their new metrics are, and would adjust quickly. I don't think it's a foregone conclusion that you would find any fall out quite frankly in the other conferences. Even if there is, wouldn't impact the Big East as none of the schools coming in would have fbs football.

Also, I don't see the Big East wanting to wait, and then possibly have teams they want falling apart because of the new stuff that maybe their conference isn't doing.

I think it's safe to assume the BE has plan A, B, and C already lined up and just waiting to see what happens incase a new plan A.2 pops up

RE: Dayton vs Big East
totally agree. don't see it dragging out much at all quite frankly(just like I don't see the d4 thing meandoring around a lot either). Both will happen quickly.
