RE: Why won't Chris Petersen leave Boise?
I saw JR post this on another thread, I don't know much about it myself... but if it's true it sounds like a pretty good reason to me.

Petersen won't leave Boise. He has a special needs child who has a community of support there and he is a family man first.

Also, none of the other Boise coaches who have left have experienced much success since leaving including Dirk Koetter and Dan Hawkins. Maybe it's not the coaches as much as it is the program itself?

RE: Why won't Chris Petersen leave Boise?
Why should he leave?

Not everyone is motivated by money or prestige. For example, my Dad worked for the same Fortune 500 company his whole life. By age 35 he had accepted 1 transfer to a different division and 3 promotions. After that he turned down at least 3 promotions (that I know of). He found a position he liked in a city he enjoyed, and that was worth more than the better title, the corner office, and even the (significant) increase in power/salary.

Peterson's got a great thing going. A better question is: why do so many other people think the grass is greener somewhere else?

RE: Why won't Chris Petersen leave Boise?
My father turned down an opportunity to go to a Detroit newspaper in 1963. He preferred being the big fish in the small town, since it was a better environment for us to grow up in. He was proven right too. The Detroit riots began the next year, and he still managed to become the Sportswriter of the Year while working in West Virginia...

He also made some lifelong friends in sports, witnessed a good bit of national history (Wilt Chamberlain broke the NBA scoring record held by George Mikan - on a FT oddly enough - at the Charleston Civic Center), and had contacts all over the country feeding him information that many national media members would have loved to have had. Charleston, WV was a great sports town during his time covering sports here...

Sam Huff, who went on to become Marriot's Vice President, after his career at WVU and in the NFL, got him a suite at Marriot's new resort hotel at Waikiki Point when it first opened. His reservation was for a $1000 a night suite, and he was charged $45 per night. The receptionist at the desk when he checked in looked at his reservation and said, "who the hell do you know?" The old man said, "can you keep a secret? She said, "Yes". He said, "So can I", and left her wondering...

I could go on with a bunch of stories like that. But you get my point. Money isn't everything, especially for those whose values are set pretty high...

Doesn't hurt that Peterson gets paid really well too.

I think he has a 5 year $12 million contact.

He's mentioned over and over again, that he has a good life in BSU and money isn't an issue. He doesn't have the stress of running a P5 program. There are some better things in life and he has brought BSU to another level and still has more room for BSU to grow.

This. I hate how people bring this up every year as if there is something wrong with it. Petersen should be applauded for not letting his ego get in the way. Guy is making several million a year in Boise and he and his family are happy.... at what point is enough enough? Sure he could go to a PAC 12 school and make a little more and have more exposure but is it all worth it when you consider the negatives? I don't think so. CFB needs more Chris Petersen's.

If you've never been there, take it from me Boise is beautiful. Maybe he just loves his job, loves his city, and has enough $$$. I get that.

Quote: Why should he leave?

Because he wants a new challenge, professionally speaking?

His name comes up for EVERY JOB OPENING EVER, and it's not just fan speculation. That means he's putting his name out there. Heck, Mack Brown isn't even gone and there's speculation that Petersen is the next head coach at Texas.

So I'm assuming he will move on at some point. Just has to be the right situation.

The only concern I would have as a Boise fan is if the G5 really do get relegated outside of the new D4. That might prompt him to rethink staying at the smurf turf.

Must be something about that part of the the Northwest that keeps coaches there. Mark Few won't leave Gonzaga either despite numerous opportunities.

Supposedly he has never been comfortable with a lot of media interaction. Having your colonoscopy telecast live on LHN may not fit that mindset if it is true.

If he likes the community, why would he leave...he's probably the highest paid person in the entire state.

The job jumpers usually fizzle out eventually. How's Butch Jones doing at Tennessee? I'm not convinced he will ever win the SEC East.

Pure shame for Skip Holtz that he listened to his daddy...went to Florida for "family" reasons and now works in Ruston, Louisiana.

I don't know. The times before he turned down overtures, were before Boise had the access to BCS bowl they NOW have had in recent years. Back when there were still only four BCS Bowls. And he didn't even think about leaving then. So you never know.

I think 4 games into his tenure may be an unreasonably small time to make this pronouncement.

Just about every coach fizzles out eventually, even the ones who are at a job forever (see Bowden, Bobby). Butch Jones is in year 1 in Knoxville. Probably not the best example to use of a guy fizzling out already.

He will never win a national championship at Boise. Most in their respective professions want the chance to achieve the most that they can. He could be a legend if he won at Texas or USC.
