It sucks, but there are 80,000 civilian DOD employees counting on a paycheck that isn't coming and the military is spending money on flying a football team around? The optics are awful.

By the way, I'm a fan of a team that has Navy on its schedule and would really enjoy that game being played.

In previous govt shutdowns, the academies games were not cancelled. This is a political ploy, nothing more.
The difference was back in 1995 when the gvmt was shut down- all 3 academies played at home. That's the big difference. This time, Air Force and Army are scheduled to play away.

Except in previous shutdowns, the shutdown party wasn't trying to send up piecemeal resolutions to fund everything except the program in contention.

Should have never been question, because the military was funded and not part of the 'slimdown'.

There was a govt shutdown from 11/13 to 11/19 of 1995. On 11/14, during the shutdown, AFA played at Navy. AFA probably had already traveled when the shutdown came about so perhaps not relevant. But there was another govt shutdown from 12/5/95 to 1/6/96. AFA traveled to the Copper Bowl in Arizona which was played on 12/27/95.
