Finally moved into the top 25 of the poll that matters, still sitting outside of the poll that doesn't matter.
Congrats. The good news is that they should not face any serious opposition over the next five weeks as they march thru what should be the weakest stretch of their schedule. Of course that is also bad news in the sense that they face the risk of being lulled into falling asleep at the wheel and, with no opportunity for a "statement" game, they will have to get by on scoring "style points" for the next month. Still, they should be able to move up smartly in the polls over the next month simply by attrition from above.

NIU needs to finish within the top 12 of the BCS standings to get a BCS bid again.

RE: NIU #23 in Coaches, 26 in AP
At #23 in the Coaches Poll already, NIU appears to have plenty of time to sail up the rankings to #12 and claim that BCS spot.
Ohio last year didn't crack the Top 25 until they were 7-0.
The bigger question is will Fresno State remain undefeated? They've already played some of their toughest games. They will have to prove it again against Boise State in the MWC title game.
Sagarin Ratings at this point favor NIU.
MWC
26. Utah State (3-2)
33. Boise State (3-2)
61. Fresno State (4-0)
71. Wyoming (3-1)
90. Nevada (3-2)
96. Colorado State (2-3)
MAC
52. Northern Illinois (4-0)
67. Bowling Green (4-1)
73. Ball State (4-1)
74. Toledo (2-3)
82. Ohio (3-1)
94. Buffalo (2-2)
NIU has to play Toledo, Ball State and the MACC which is a stronger schedule than Fresno which has Wyoming and the MWCC.

What do you mean "maybe". Those are the rules, for one more year: Finish in the top 12 and ahead of an AQ champion.

Will be tough to finish ahead of AQ champ this season. Best chance would be 2-losses by B1G, Pac 12 or AAC champ, and that doesn't look likely at this point in season.

You guys are always confusing the rules...good thing this is the last season for it anyway:
The champion of Conference USA, the Mid-American Conference, the Mountain West Conference, or the Sun Belt Conference (hereinafter "non-AQ group") will earn an automatic berth in a BCS bowl game if either:
A. Such team is ranked in the top 12 of the final BCS Standings, or
B. Such team is ranked in the top 16 of the final BCS Standings and its ranking in the final BCS Standings is higher than that of a champion of a conference that has an annual automatic berth in one of the BCS bowls.

I have always expect that option A would be how NIU could qualify. 2012 was a very weird season in college FB.
That said, NIU needs to hope that Fresno State doesn't go undefeated.
As I remember it ONLY ONE non-AQ conference school can get a BCS bid.
IF (huge IF) NIU finishes 12th and Fresno State 11th, Fresno, not NIU goes BCS bowling.

I believe it's only one is promised a BCS bid under the previous circumstances.
If Ball St beats UVa, and they go on to win the ACC w/ wins over Clemson and FSU, and Rutgers wins the AAC, and Iowa wins the B1G, then I think both an undefeated Fresno and NIU would get in.

Right now, the computers like NIU more and their SOS is weaker than our's. Iowa continuing to win will help further.
Fresno has an easy schedule and is barely winning game after game. I have to think at some point the voters will see through them and eventually move us over them.

Fresno may lose too. They haven't actually won an outright conference championship since 1989. They'll probably have to get through Boise State again in the championship game.

They were both undefeated and it made sense to invite both to be fair.
Also both had proven they had strong traveling fanbases that would deliver 20,000 to a BCS bowl. NIU brought what 10,000 to the Orange Bowl? Decent but not fantastic.
Looking at the schedule, I think NIU would have more games to prove itself in than Fresno which has Wyoming then the MWC Championship. NIU's computer ratings already are higher than Fresno's. A bunch of blow out wins during MAC play will boost NIU. Its too early to worry about right now.
The big thing is with NIU already #23 they should have no problem getting into the Top 12 if they run the regular season undefeated. Up until this week it was somewhat of a question.
