As noted before, a school can fire a coach at any time, but it can't hire a coach during the current season, so an interim coach must be assigned to finish out the season. Ed Orgeron gets a new chance to land a premium FBHC job by doing well with this chance the rest of this season. It worked out well for Dabo Sweeney at Clemson when Tommy Bowden was fired midseason, maybe for Ed as well.

Ed has no chance of landing the SC job. With everything that has happened they have to go out and get the sure thing.

I'm not a fan of USC. I hope they continue to go downhill.

Correct, there is a ZERO chance he lands that job. He's a loose cannon, and does not fit in at all out there. He is disliked out there almost as much as Kiffin.

You may be right about the USC job specifically, but do you remember when the DC at TX Tech took over from their FBHC for their bowl game and won? He asked for but didn't get the FBHC job there (it was given to Tuberville instead) but did get the FBHC at ECU where he is now. Perhaps it is another example of "closing a door, but opening a window".

Lane Kiffin makes Bobby Petrino look like Mother Teresa. I had rather have Fess St. John hand pick a coach for us than have Lane Kiffin.

A close friend of my wife works for a news outlet in Knoxville. When Kiffin was first hired at (sl)UT, my wife's friend was repeatedly forced to drop stories about Kiffin's misdeeds.

Cute joke, but we have a coach who will probably be ours for at least 5 more years. He will have to have time to take advantage of our soon to be announced new football facilities and the recruiting boost they will provide. However, I wouldn't mind UAB hiring Lane's wife as a Golden Girl.

RE: NBR Lane Kiffin
I think firing him is stupid. What did they expect him to do with 30 less scholarships and a year or 2 bowl ban? He recruited 5 star players to every position. Problem is there is no depth when the starters got injured. It isn't his fault. I hope they are worse off in the future than they are now.
• A postseason ban in football following the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
• A loss of 30 total football scholarships over the 2011, 2012 and 2013 seasons.
• A vacation of all football victories starting in December 2004 and running through the 2005 season. This includes the national championship win over Oklahoma on Jan. 4, 2005.
• All statistics vacated for Bush, Mayo and women’s tennis athlete Gabriela Niculescu in the games which the NCAA deemed them ineligible due to rules violations.
• Bush and Mayo must be disassociated from USC athletics.
• An acceptance of USC’s self-imposed penalties on its basketball program, which included a forfeiture of all wins in 2007-2008 and a one-year postseason ban.
• All titles won during ineligible games must be vacated and trophies and banners must be removed.
• A vacation of wins in the women’s tennis program from May 2006 to May 2009, for long-distance telephone violations committed by a student-athlete.
• A reduction of recruiting days for the men’s basketball program in 2010-2011.
• Four years of probation.
Did any of those get dropped or reduced?

Maybe Pat Haden knows a lot more about some off the field stuff than he is going to let the press know about ?

I'm not a USC fan either, but I'd say the college football nation needs them to be contesting for Natl Championships each year, otherwise it's gonna be more and more SEC repeats, especially Bama repeats.

Agree... They should have just kept him and waited it out. Then, find another USC guy. But, my sense tells me there was more than meets the eye in regards to that admin v. coach situation and they went ahead and cut bait. I believe that Lane Kiffin is probably about as a big a dork as there is (with the ego to match), and the admin at USC was tired of dealing with him.
