03-lmfao Only 2 problems. They're horrible and have no fans. They can re-brand as many times as they like nobody in NY gives 2 01-rivalss about their athletic program.

Did you really take offense to that? University of Orlando is a way better name than University of Central Florida. And as a side note we already spent part of our history as a directional school.

If they rebrand as University of New York then people in New York will jump on the band wagon if they have a good season on the name alone. That name has alot of potential.

RE: Buffalo is getting serious
buffalo may look really good on paper but reality is they are not highly sought at by conferences. what everyone seems to forget is that they were a private school for over 120 years. they are not quite the typical state school that people portray them as.

they are not the true flagship school of the state. the SUNY system was designed to have 4 "core" schools of equal status. Buffalo's SUNY status makes it so that a lot of its decision making gets impacted by the will of the rest of the SUNY system. they dont have the independence that normal states schools do.

these are issue's not limited to buffalo but the rest of the northeast. to be a successful state school in that region particularly new york & new england you have to be twice as good to be half as bad as a state school in the south. the state schools fight amongst each other while the privates fight to keep the states schools from getting to strong. even if buffalo manages to become the #1 school in new york they still play second fiddle to army, cornell, syracuse & maybe even st. johns.

buffalo looks really good on paper but when you get deep down too it they just are not a desired school. if they were a desired school they could of been in the AAC long ago.

I'd rather be named after a whole region of a state than be named after one city.

id take a city name over a regional name ANY DAY. in fact the only ones who disagree with that assessment are the ones who are fans of directional schools.

Really? Have you heard about the University of New Orleans? They are public. I don't get the hang up on these boards on names. Yes the so called directional schools were usually created after the other public schools in a state but at the end of the day is what you make of yourself.
I wouldn't trade the name of my school and its diploma has served me well in my life. All this snobbery about directional school names it's just plain BS by others trying to make themselves bigger than they really are.

i think its a legitimate point. you have schools like pitt & louisville who are the 2nd best state schools and it just shows that theres a precedent that gives those types of names more prestige. i never really classified northwestern as directional. im talking schools like northern iowa, eastern new mexico etc.

LOL. Too funny how old are you? I see you can't carry a discussion. All I was pointing out that there are exceptions to every rule. Just because a school changes its name to a city won't change the school.
Yes many city named schools have more prestige but there are many others that do not.

What I find amazing is that Louisville is no bigger than Akron or Toledo yet they've been able to propel that market to a P5 while the other two cities have languished.

While size they have in common, neither Akron or Toledo is the #1 city in their respective states and lacks the decades of prime time state investment that Louisville has had. Louisville is a city of far greater cultural value.
