Do you all really hate tax-payer dollars being wasted?

What do you think of teachers being on-line on sports forums during the workday?

The school districts make up a huge component of a property owner's taxes.

Ok, spin it.

I am home sick and thought- "So that is what teachers do during their lunch"..... But then postings were made in span of hours, so I was wrong.

Where the F is Stephanie Townsend Allala, when you need her?!?!?!?!

Shouldn't this be in the official ballpark thread?

I guess being a moderator has it priviledges.

I am absolutely flattered that someone would take the time to try and triangulate my posts to determine whether or not I am using tax payer money.

I love you guys.

So it's always fair to point out waste, as long as you're not the one being exposed.

My point was to show you the level of hypocrisy you practice. You're such a good citizen in watching the actions of others, and question their ethics. Yet, you're exempt from it.

Questioning their ethics? I am entitled to an opinion just like everyone else.

I simply thought it was a bad idea. I've never questioned anyone's ethics.

And for your information. I am not wasting the tax payer's money.

What information do you have that would lead you to that conclusion?

And you say I jump to conclusions?03-lmfao

I think every teacher should be posting instead of teaching, preparing for class, or even communicating with parents.

There..... Now it's fair.

Just like everyone else who has a job, I have break times and lunch time. If I choose to use that time to comment on a forum, that is my right.

Besides, I'm not an hourly wage earner. Therefore, I get paid a salary to accomplish my job regardless of time.

Which is to say that I could very well call parents after hours when they are more likely to be at home or I can choose to do lesson plans at 2 am if I want to.

If teachers were " on the clock" I would have a lot more free time at home. But no, I do plenty of work when most people get to clock out.

So don't even go there. I put in more hours a week than most people and I don't get paid overtime.

Nothing against teachers, but you're also off for the summer, spring break, and xmass vacation, so don't go playing the victim. You're a history teacher, how much can a lesson plan change from year to year?

Are you using a school computer to post on a sports message board?

FYI

Teachers do not get paid vacation. We may get summers off and spring break etc. etc. but we don't get paid for that.

You are correct. History does not change much so if you wanted to, you could do the same lessons every year. The same could be said for Math, Science, and English. However, most good teachers change it up every year. Why would anyone want to do the same thing over and over again. Boring.

No. I am not using a school computer to post on this forum.

Smoke screens.....

You've posted at all hours of the day, and several times during the same day (and it wasn't lunch time either). As for breaks, you have the longest ass breaks in the world.

As for overtime, I teach Finance Master's courses, and I lecture for 4 hours at times, after an 8-10 hour workday. No sympathy here. I do it cuz I love it. But even with adults, I'm not online posting while my students are around. THEY are the focus.

You should run for politics. You'd fit right in.....

Wait a minute!!!! Did I just say FIT in?..... Fit, Fitbud.... Coincidence?

Randaddy

Summer school is a thing of the past. There are STAAR test administrations for those who failed but that is about it. We are not forced to do anything.

You are correct however that teachers can elect to have their pay checks strung out to 12 months a year but the pay does not change. All teachers get paid for only 183 days of work with NO PAID VACATION.

Run

You have it easy. You get to lecture to adults that want to learn and are paying out of their pocket to be there.

Give me a break.

I have to teach 150+ kids U. S. History. 99% of them have no interest in U.S. history whatsoever.

99% of them will stop listening to you after 10 min. if you lecture them.

On top of that, I have handicapped, learning disabled, behavioral challenged dyslexic and students who don't know English.

You make me laugh. You think you got it tough?

While you get to talk for hours about something you love to adults who want to listen to what you have to say, I spend hours trying to find creative ways to get teenagers to appreciate American history at a high level so that they will have an opportunity to pass a standardized test that most Americans would fail in a heartbeat.

Have it easy? Once again, you and your assumptions.

Adults are more engaged. But they challenge you more too. They are educated folks with bachelor degrees, and usually experts in their field. I even have some school teachers (which there are good ones, and others that make me wonder what they can offer the kids).

Anyway, the point is that I do it, in addition to my full-time demanding job (which I just started 4 months ago).

If you think they don't listen, then you teach that way. You've lost the battle for their attention/respect, before it even started. You obviously don't know how to reach/engage them. May want to consider another job, and stop taking taxpayer money.

I'll give you the kids with disabilities (you should know better than to call them handicapped). And also on those who aren't fluent in English (using the phrase "knowing English", is as poor command of the language, as those you are trying to describe).

Clearly you have no clue. I totally engage my kids because I don't ever lecture them. Lecturing is the worst way that you can teach a group of people, even adults.

Have you no clue of he learning pyramid? OMG. I feel bad for you so Im going to give you the heads up.

Tell someone something and they forget
Teach someone something and they will remember
Involve someone something and they will understand.

Getting challenged is what you want in a classroom. That is where the learning starts.

Come on man. Are you seriously going to compare adults challanging you on a subject that you know to a group of teenagers who don't give a **** about history?

Clearly, YOU have no clue. It isn't my student's that are tuning out (grad or undergrad). I see how the pyramid is working for you.

Have you never lectured with interaction, examples, and input from students?

My students claim to learn much from my classes, and provide the feedback to prove it.

When I run into them (even years later), they tell me how things stick with them, because of the examples I gave, and how I tied it to something they could/can relate to.

I'm so glad you were not my teacher. They don't give a shet about history cuz they can't relate to it..... That's your job to do. And if that doesn't work, it's not the class that is failing, it's another.

I now see why you spend your day posting. It's the only forum you get feedback from.

Lecture with interaction is better than simply lecturing. However, you didn't say that in the beginning. All you said was that you lecure.

Regardless, even that isn't enough. The learning pyramid shows that students in a classroom where people lecture most of the time only retain 10% of what is taught. It doesn't matter if they are asking questions or discussing the topic with you.

The true way to teach people at any age is to give them the tools to teach eachother. Present them with a problem to solve and they will retain 90% of what they learned by solving that problem.

Don't feel bad though. I had a lot of professors who taught like you do. I learned regardless because I have a photographic memory.

I'm not the one with the audience who has shut me out.

You claim to know the latest in teaching techniques, yet your student's don't care.

BTW, you missed how I teach in the earlier post, Mr. Memory. They learn because they can relate to the situation and when to apply the formulas/techniques. They don't require Rainman's photo memory, Raymond. And yes, I know you're an excellent driver, and that you like Judge Wapner.
