Yes - the practice facility will be right next door to Hofheinz, which is used by both men and women.

How good is this Houston team in the American this year? Do they have Chicken Knowels back yet?

Yes - Chicken will play. We have a full 13 man roster with some pretty good talent. There are no excuses this year. The expectactions are NIT or better.

Elaborate? Besides Chicken. Who else Houston have?

What did they finish in last year CUSA?

RE: Houston puts $12.6M Basketball Practice Facility Out for Bid
National Top 100 recruits
Fr. 6-10 F Chicken Knowles
So. 6-8 F Danuel House (CUSA Frosh of the Year)
So. 6-4 PG LJ Rose (Baylor transfer)
Jr. 6-8 PF Tashawn Thomas (1st Team All-CUSA)

Other Veterans of Note
Sr 6-1 PG Tione Womack (last year's starting PG)
Sr. 6-8 C JJ Richardson (Pitt transfer; banger)
So 6-5 Jherrod Stiggers (set Frosh school record for made 3s)
So. 6-6 Leron Barnes (great athlete)
So. 6-10 C Valentine Izundu (22 blocks vs. 2 turnovers last year; 76% FG shooter)

Newcomers of Note
Fr. 6-1 PG JJ Simons (hearing good things)
Fr. 6-9 PF Ahmed Hamdy (banger)

Last year, Houston won 20 games and made the CBI, beating Texas in the first round. But honestly, we weren't very consistent. We finished 7-9 in CUSA. Our 20 wins were padded by a ridiculously easy nonconference schedule.

Our biggest bugaboo is defense. We've added the highly successful Navarro JC coach as an assistant, and his Navarro teams were excellent on defense. So there is reason for hope that we can impove defensively under his instruction.

So it appears the new practice facility project is separate from the Hofheinz Pavilion renovation project. So any updates on the renovations? If so, what is the timeline for that project?

The only details I have seen is they will do the new practice facility(adjacent to the Hof) first in order to not interfere with this year's basketball season . The renovations come after that project is complete .

Go Coogs !

RE: Houston puts $12.6M Basketball Practice Facility Out for Bid
Just to update, the total cost of the new practice facility will be approximately $17-18M once professional fees, administrative expenses and contingencies are factored in on top of the $12.6M construction cost limit.

As for the Hofheinz renovations, here is the recent Ask the AD column:

Q: Can you give us any updates regarding the renovation of Hofheinz Pavilion, including estimated cost, timelines and the entire process as a whole?

A: Yes I can, Chris. Our first priority is a practice facility for our men's and women's basketball programs. Once the Hofheinz renovation starts, our teams won't be able to practice in Hofheinz Pavilion so we need a practice facility for our teams to work out in as opposed to the costs of having them practice off campus. Also, the practice facility allows us to stay in step with many other athletic departments and gives us a wow factor in recruiting. We are planning on hiring the architects and engineers for the practice facility this fall with the design time taking approximately six months and the construction to immediately follow. We estimate the practice facility to cost around $18-22 million.

Once the practice facility is completed we will begin the process of renovating Hofheinz Pavilion. We are still working on the numbers for the renovation of Hofheinz Pavilion and we will need to raise additional money for the facility once we do finalize the numbers.

*******************
It is my belief that we have the funds necessary to build the practice facility, and so the project is going forward. We don't have the funds for the basketball renovation yet. However, as soon as we strike a naming rights deal for the football stadium, that will free up some of the student fee money currently allocated to the football stadium for use on the Hofheinz renovation.

While I'm glad that we're finally going to see these renovations of Hofheinz actually happen, it sucks that the arena won't see a facelift until 2016 when the new practice facility is completed.

That seems like an awfully slow timeline. Any reason for taking that long?

They won't have an architect until January. Not enough time to design and procure to start construction by March 2014. So they are waiting until after the 2014-15 season to start construction.

I hope they find a way to speed that process up, it would be nice to see that done and help in the recruiting wars!!!

Ah... I'm really disappointed that Hof won't be renovated in the near future. Too bad.

We are renovating the HOF - we have to build the practice facilities first:

Me too. The earlier timelines had the practice facility being built while the football stadium construction was still going on. Something must have happened to push the practice facility dates out. My understanding is that the financing was in place. Wonder what the issue is.
