I keep talking to friends about how much fun we had at that game, the momentum keep going back-n-forth. We were taking shots after each ODU score and we were out by half time.
I went to the game with my dad and we had a great time. My seats are 16 rows up from where that climactic two point conversion was attempted and thwarted. I have not had such a reaction to a live sports play like that in a long time, maybe never. I went totally ape sh*t. The entire game was a gut-wrenching, roller coaster experience, particularly the final eight minutes or so.
Many of our fans including myself are justly concerned about our porous defense, however I feel like there is quite a bit of overreation being displayed. There are always circumstances in a given game that present challenges. Key players injured, lack of experience at some positions, etc. When after a loss one looks back at those challenges and sees that they were not effectively overcome, one can cite them, and that may justly be labeled as excuse making; on-the-other-hand, after a hard fought victory in which many such challenges were faced and overcome, I believe it is well within reason to cite those same challenges and the fact that they were overcome as an achievement. I also want to see a much more competative defense, but I realize that not only are we in our first season under our third DC, there are also many first year players on the defensive side of the ball who are racking up considerable PT. I congratulate our entire team on the victory.
We ODU fans have now witnessed 40 victories in just four seasons plus four games of a fifth. It is an impressive feat to go from inception to that kind of success no matter the level at which a program competes. It is somewhat a doubleedged sword to have a great amount of success so early on. I believe many of our fans have unrealistic expectations for our program during it's transition from fcs to FBS. There will be many more challenges for both the program and it's fans to overcome. I do hope that the majority of our fans will take the time to reflect back some few short years to the time when football at ODU was but a dream and enjoy how far we have come so quickly.
There is nothing wrong with wanting the best out of your team, or being upset, and voicing your opinions when you don't believe it's being delivered, but for goodness sake take some time to enjoy the victories, and the other great aspects of even having a team to go watch play on Saturdays. Charlotte fans, tuck that away also, as it may serve you someday as well.
