Historic Crump Stadium near downtown Memphis is most likely coming down, probably sooner than later. The Memphis paper ran an article to that effect recently. The old stadium's located near Bellevue and Peabody, behind Central High School. Crump holds a very large place in Rebel football history. The '48 Rebs played TCU in the Delta Bowl there. And they, along with Arkansas and Tennessee, played many a 'home' game at Crump. And of course it was Memphis State's home stadium for years. I believe it opened in about 1937, and was in use at the collegiate level until the Liberty Bowl opened about 1965...

The Rebels played many big games there. Their first televised game was at Crump, vs. Kentucky, around 1950, if I recall correctly what I read. They often played Ark. and UT there, as 'home' games. I went by there and snapped a pic or two, although you can't really get a good overall view of it without gaining entry. I imagined the Rebel legends of the 40s and 50s playing on that old field, with Coach Vaught on the sidelines.

I marched on that field with my highschool band, during the Cotton Carnival competitions of the late 60s. We (Stuttgart) finished in the top 3 with Humboldt and Bolivar for several years. If you're in or near the Memphis area, you really should pay the old place a visit, before they knock it down. It's a 'Rebel Heritage Sight' if there ever was one..

THANKS, LR. I HAVE A LOT OF FOND MEMORIES OF CRUMP STADIUM. IN THE 50's WHEN I WAS AT OLE MISS, WE WON MORE GAMES THAN WE LOST. SHE WAS A GREAT FOOTBALL VENUE IN HER DAY.
