Install a consumption tax to help the poor and get the economy booming. Lots of problems you are concerned about go away when people have jobs.

I always thought until recently that illegal aliens could not get food stamps.
So, just take them off food stamps and give them a one way trip back to where they came from.

I don't think Tom realizes that most kids borne into poverty are simply extra meal tickets and welfare money for the parents. Sterilize welfare recipients and their kids and the cycle might not repeat itself on such a large scale. Reverse the sterilization once they get off Welfare.

Some of you paint quite a picture of walking over dead emaciated bodies of children due to cuts in Food Stamps, but are probably standing in line at the local Apple store to get the latest greatest new Apple Phone.

Government programs like SNAP/Medicare/Medicaide are essential to helping the poor...and increasing the MW (and I'm talking $8.25...not $15) will also help lift the working poor.

In order to truely help the poor, those programs must be finite. They cannot be an endless handout, and cannot allow individuals or families to live better than those that work for a living, even if that work provides only a minimal means of living.
This is a step in the right direction, though not enough of one.
Medicare is not a handout in the same sense of foodstamps and medicaid. Medicare is paid for during your working career in taxes. Yes, tne government has over promised, but due to faulty assumptions and unforseen rise in the cost of healthcare, both of which can be corrected.
