Agreed. I went to UIC my freshman year and that place could make an onion cry. By the way, the funny thing is that they show pics of U of I in Champaign not UIC. There goes the credibility factor of this report.

yeah it is pretty bad. poor continuity too. NIU looks bad because the center of campus is bad. Library has no character. Holmes student center is a dump. It is a mindless maze of rooms. poorly planned. Wirtz hall is crap. health center and police building, bad.

I disagree. The library had plenty of character when I was a student. You had the 1st floor carpet that would make you dizzy as your eyes tried to adjust to it, the 4th floor Men's room that was all brick and tile so that every little sound could be heard by people sitting at the table just outside, and the icy stairs of death leading to the little courtyard just outside. Don't even try to negotiate those in the winter time.

The campus itself and the buildings are not a dump. Parts of Champaign definitely are.

UIC is much uglier than NIU is and I've always really liked the area at NIU around the lagoon.

The Beach Boys came to Northern for a concert (yes early 70's) and all in the Chick Evans Fieldhouse went crazy over that line!

No need to worry about the tradition of ugly buildings continuing, just look in the endzone of HS. Yordon Center is so ugly, its Midwestern- small-town-grade-school architecture. Drive through any town in the Midwest and you will find a building that looks just like it with a sign in front like Mildred P. Snortsgrass - Elementary School. How a governing board (or whoever passes this stuff and gives the go ahead for it to be built) can go from the Alumni Center to the Yordon Center is beyond me. And the behemoth behind Yordon, I will say one thing for the Chessick Center it definitely fits in with the Farm buildings surrounding DeKalb, a barn........no other way to describe it (a nice barn, but a barn). I was there when they built all those high-rise dorms because they didn't know what to do with all the kids (avoiding the draft) that chose to go to college. When I was a senior in high school in 1965 the enrollment was 9500, when I graduated in 1970 it was 36,000 (including grad students, and part-time students). They didn't have time to think about architecture, all they could see was green and I am obviously not talking about grass. The new housing compex is a step in the right direction but we are basically stuck with some bad choices in design over the years, and unfortunately as I said when I started this rant, the tradition continues.

SIUE isn't bad looking if you love nature and wild animals everywhere. Campus is quite spread out as well.
