Another Round of Conference Rumors
I've been distracted with the return of the NFL and ODU football but it looks like there may be something brewing with conference realignment. No matter what happens moving forward it will impact ODU since C-USA will most likely be involved with any future reshuffling.

Anyway, a link about the AAC expanding is here (and ODU gets mentioned as a short list candidate): http://csnbbs.com/showthread.php?tid=648643&page=19

And the JMU posters think they are going to C-USA or AAC come the first week in October: http://csnbbs.com/showthread.php?tid=603367&page=350

I don't see how we could afford to jump ship with entrance/exit fees, a new stadium, and the fact that the revenue difference is negligible.

There is absolutely zero chance of JMU getting invited to AAc, and I seriously doubt C-USA. SB maybe.

I generally look at the realignment board for entertainment purposes only.

The AAC would never take an FCS startup.
JMU does NOT bring the DC market, as shown by the numbers over and over.

Speaking of which, I stopped in NoVa to see my parents after the Maryland game. We ended up watching the local DC news at 11, NBC4 to be exact. During the sports segment, the following schools highlights were shown; Maryland, VT, UVA and WVU. They then moved on to the Nationals. JMU didn't even get their score (the Akron game) announced on a market they supposedly deliver.

They didn't mention Harvard either, so JMU is like Harvard really.

RE: Another Round of Conference Rumors
I've heard JMU isn't in love with the idea of accepting an Aaack bid, because they're holding out for the ACC invitation that's surely just around the corner. However, if the unthinkable happens and the ACC doesn't call, well, they would be willing to CONSIDER an Aaack invitation. But I'm thinking the Aaack would have to buy them dinner first.

Nobody delivers the DC market in Football other than Maryland, Virginia Tech, UVA, Navy, Penn St and maybe Syracuse. Probably about in that order. I thought ODU had a small presence up here, but we dont make a dent. And neither does JMU. GMU and GW hoops are a barely small blip on the radar as well.

the AAC is really just the C-USA 2.0 plus UCONN and CINCY... that being said, I'd like to see our emblem listed among with them!

I don't think any school really delivers the DC market. VT arguably has the biggest presence, with Maryland a distant second. UVA has some, but it's not very big. Honestly, Navy is almost an afterthought.

The only basketball schools that matter in DC are Georgetown and UMD.

That's only if you live in Northern Virginia. The entire DC metro area most likely is heavily Maryland and then VT in second place.

the DC area is a mix bag of rooting interests for FB. Sure VT and MD get a lot of support (VT def in Va, I suspect its different in MD). UVA gets some love, but so do OSU, PSU and Mich as well as the bigger SEC schools. just go to any sport bar on a Sat afternoon and you'll see.

for hoops its certainly diff b/c you add G'town to the mix (no one cares about VT hoops, even in blacksburg) along with UMD, UVA and they'll throw Mason a bone every once in a while. AU and GW, if they're successful, also get some pub. so I'd say basketball has more of a regional feel in the DMV than football does.

This.

There might be a JMU game on in a Sports Bar, just as there might be an ODU, W&M, or UR game on as well.
That is not "delivering the market" for any those schools; nor is putting 15k in FedEx and not even knowing where those fans came from.

When you "deliver" a market it means you deliver the Designated Market Area, or DMA, for television.
Period.

Pretty much.

VT, for example delivers Norfolk, Roanoke, Richmond, and DC, and about everywhere else in Va.

ODU doesn't really even deliver Norfolk yet, and it won't until we are included in the CUSA media deal. Even then, VT and UVA will still "deliver" Norfolk as well.

You want to deliver D.C.? Get the Redskins. Everyone else gives you varying sizes of slivers.

Lol. So true. You could argue that the Redskins don't deliver it all when the Steelers or Cowboys are in FedEx also. Caps deliver a little more sliver than the Nats.

I do believe JMU's sliver is larger than ODU's. Just not enough for any contribution to a TV contract. The cool thing is that ODU never has to say it brings the DC market. Our market is large enough and there is no doubt that we are a big part of it.
