RE: Toledo DEAD LAST in MAC home attendance this week
Plucker is right...we should ALL be at the Navy game...seeing the cadet corp march in would be worth the price of admission alone (that is if they will travel this far without UT helping with the bill).
Any way from here on out it is going to be a good year and hopefully a MACC year! Get out to the GB and have some sudds!

A six year cycle of home and home's with the military academies would be the envy of a lot of programs. I wouldn't ever miss one of those games. Heck, those away games would be worth the money.

If you talk to them, the average Toledo student does not care about Toledo football. I've openly heard them say that the Rocket football team sucks. The could care less about MAC football. As I was going to check out the UT apparel at halftime, I had to navigate all of the students leaving for party land. They are 18 yrs old, do not care or know about Toledo's winning tradition. The just know that Toledo was 0-2 and playing some team that they have never heard of. The last few years, student attendance of college sporting events nationally has been on the decline. Football and basketball venues have begun selling traditional student section tickets to the general public. Duke began selling off tickets to home basketball games. Stanford cannot get students to attend football games. Students no longer have the attention span or desire to sit through 2 and 3 hour events (on a national scale). The south, along with places like Nebraska and Oklahoma have always been different. College football has always been a rite/ritual at those places, pro sports is not that closely followed or present in those areas, and they play for national titles.
Well... we do suck at the moment... Toledo hasn't been consistent in winning... if we were ranked back to back years... and had a chance to clobber national teams then the stadium would be packed... right now, Toledo is going down in flames... who wants to watch that if you were a student with a lot more options that seem like a lot more fun?
Maybe you need a DJ and a foghorn.

Except for special games such as the Army/Navy game the cadet corps doesn't normally travel to away games, so I would not expect to see them here this year. I did see them march into the stadium in 2000 when UT played in Annapolis and it was impressive. That was a strange game----Navy took a 14-0 lead before the UT offense ever touched the ball, but after that, it was all UT.
In 2001 Navy brought their cadet band with them and they marched in the UT homecoming parade as I recall. The Chief of Naval Operations and the Superintendent of the Naval Academy were both in attendance but as usual the Corps of Cadets did not make the trip. I also remember that their coach, Charlie Weatherbie was fired right after that game.

RE: Toledo DEAD LAST in MAC home attendance this week
I still don't think a sell out vs. Navy will happen. Navy is a solid team, but not the name recognition to get students and the occasional fan to the game. I do think they play good football, but not Boise State or good BCS football that we have had in the glass bowl in the past. Boise State and UC weren't even sell outs.
Navy was our biggest attended game in history, next to 3 or 4 other 30k+ games that year. Not comparable. It wasn't like Toledo averaged 26k then 10k more came because we played Navy? You really think we will have 20k, 20k, then 26k+ for Navy? I bet it'll be a good crowd, maybe better than homecoming but still in the 23k range. And that's only if we beat Ball State and WMU.
Also an 8pm start which sadly will push some fans away.

1.) Boise was a sell out - 28,900+. 2.) When was the game moved to 8pm? It's still listed as 7pm on the website and I haven't seen/heard anything different.

Former UT President Johnson's sister is the wife of the Admiral who was the CNO at that point in time (4 Star Admiral).

Sorry I was thinking of the Arizona game. 25,905.
Anyways, MUCH bigger names than Navy. Plus UC and even Boise state brought 2/3k of their own. I'm banking on Navy having a regular MAC crowd, which is good because Annapolis is far away and a few hundred is better than we would travel there, but still...I'm not buying a sell out.
Prove me wrong Rocket fans.
I was told it was at 8:00pm. Not sure if that will change or not.

Its no big deal (and not to pick nits) but I think that the CNO was actually the brother of Dan Johnson's wife.
This was only about a month and a half after 9/11 and I was rather surprised before the game to see President and Mrs. Johnson along with the CNO, Admiral Clark, strolling by themselves together down the access road between lot 10 and the stadium headed toward their seats, presumably in the press box, without so much as even a campus cop around to provide for personal security.

UT has a real good opportunity to market the Navy game. They could have a ceremony for active duty members and veterans, have discounted tickets, tell people that they can come support their Rockets AND the Armed Forces. Hopefully they do all that.

OU usually has a decent draw. Plus, I'm sure Marshall brought a few people as well.
Less than 1,000... Bull 5#17 Knew people at the game and saw it on TV looked like somewhere between 7,000-9,000 could have been a little more or a little less.
If you're going to make stuff up make it plausible.

Ticket prices are not an excuse. Plenty of deals out there. Does not help that the daily local spends WAY too much space on the nuts in Columbus

If the University has to do all that to market Navy then I would officially have to give up on this city/state.
It's freaken NAVY!!! One of the hardest schools to get into. One of the smartest populations. One of the best traditions. Okay, it's not Army but still.
